787.0. "Comments to WORDY::OCONNOR on Transition Guide" by DELNI::L_FELICE () Tue Mar 12 1991 08:19
DRAFT OUTLINE OF NETWORK MANAGEMENT POINT PRODUCT TRANSITION GUIDE
Here's a draft outline of the transition guide. Please send any comments or
suggestions you have to WORDY::OCONNOR. In particular, I need information
on the point product (eg, LTM) functions that you think we need to cover.
The following is an outline of the kind of information we intend to present in
the "transition guide." This guide is for users of DECmcc Management Station
and the network management "point" products who are transitioning to the new,
EMA-compliant DECmcc system.
The outline uses NMCC/DECnet Monitor as an example. The same information needs
to be compiled and presented for NMCC/VAX ETHERnim, DECelms, and Terminal
Server Manager (TSM).
The outline shows summary information for each point product, such as major
features, the DECmcc modules needed to replace the point product functionality,
restrictions, and information on any conversion programs.
The outline also shows an example of how NMCC/DECnet Monitor functions map to
DECmcc functions. We will use examples and references to the DECmcc doc set
to complete this transition information. We will not provide complete
documentation of functions because we would only be repaeting what is already
documented in the DECmcc manuals.
NMCC/DECnet Monitor --
Major Functions
---------------
o Gathers and displays DECnet performance, configuration, and error information
on systems, lines, and circuits
o Displays a network map which can notify the user of exceeded thresholds and
network conditions
o Users can generate summary and historical reports
o Database operations
o Data Gathering -- Uses NICE protocol to poll for NCP/DECnet data. Also
provides unsolicited event notification through DECnet sink feature. Polling
rates for different types of data are user-settable.
o Information Processing -- Statistical processing, data-to-threshold
comparisons.
o Information Presentation -- Map with color-change and some control features
(i.e. pan, enlarge, etc.), bar graphs and tables.
DECmcc Modules that replace NMCC Functionality

BMS -- Iconic Map PM, DECnet Phase IV AM, DECnet/OSI AM, Notification
Services FM, Performance Analyzer FM (with the Reports package), Historian FM,
Exporter FM; Director -- Configuration FM, Control FM.

Does not currently provide wire functions -- in v1.2?
Conversion program
------------------
Digital provides a program that converts the information in your NMCC/DECnet
Monitor database for use in the Management Information Repository (MIR), which
is a database of network information maintained by the DECmcc Director.

We do? This is news to me...

| This Transition Guide is planned to be released at the time of SMS/EMS
V2.2 (in conjunction with DECmcc BMS V1.2). At that time, it is hoped
that there will be an NMCC/DECnet Monitor database conversion tool. At
this time, there is none, as Chris has noted.
