784.1 | were DNS executables deleted prior to loading DNS011? | TOOK::DITMARS | Pete | Tue Mar 12 1991 14:05 | 18 |
| You can run into problems when deleting DNS executables and then re-installing
DNS V1.1.
See notes 369 and 378 in this conference and note 413 in TOOK::DNS.
I've not seen the symptoms in 784.0 as a result of this problem, but whenever
I hear the words "installed" "DNS" and "MCC" in the same problem report, that's
my first guess.
There was supposedly a memo circulating at one time (a long time ago) that folks
were interpretting as saying "to do such-and-such, delete every DNS file on your
system disk". What it should have been interpretted as saying was something
like "carefully delete any >>data<< files that DNS uses". (I've not seen this
memo.)
If you've been bitten by this, and were following instructions supplied with
one of our kits, please point out the instructions you were following so we can
address the wording of this statement.

784.2 | it's good news BAD NEWS, but we can work it out | TOOK::KOHLS | Ruth Kohls | Tue Mar 12 1991 14:33 | 36 |

784.3 | a small addition to the bad news, above (;-\) | TOOK::KOHLS | Ruth Kohls | Wed Mar 13 1991 09:55 | 18 |
| oops, that last should be:
> The bad news is that on the v1.0 kit you do need BOTH of :
>
> SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSLIB]DNS$SHARE.exe made "known" on your system
>with the INSTALL utility and
> SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSEXE]dns$default_file.dat must exist.
The installation failed in that manner because the DNS$SHARE.exe was not
present, let alone installed. The same failure would occur if that file was
not in the correct directory. If it had merely not been installed, you would
have gotten an error message and then an installation failure.
For v1.1 installation, the point is moot. But you still need DNS$SHARE.exe
to use DNS from MCC, and as you can see from this conference, you _will_
need to use DNS from MCC (indirectly, but often.).

784.4 | Make sure the DNS clerk starts | NSSG::R_SPENCE | Nets don't fail me now... | Wed Mar 13 1991 10:20 | 16 |
| When I have seen this it has been after the system (in perhaps some
other incarnation) has been used to talk to another namespace and
incorrect proceedures were used to remove an existing namespace.
The case I saw most recently had a very old version of the DNS clerk
software on it - perhaps included by the DNS Server kit or the DFS kit
or an RSM kit after some critical DNS CLerk files were inadvertantly
removed (maybe DNS was previously installed on a private disk that
doesn't exist in this incarnation).
I suggest trying to "start the clerk" with the supplied startup
proceedure and see if that works. It should result in the shared image
being installed. If it doesn't work, then the base VMS system is junque
and has some required DNS Clerk files missing.

784.5 | A last word--sanity checking gets you more work to do! | TOOK::KOHLS | Ruth Kohls | Wed Mar 13 1991 16:40 | 17 |
| A last word on the topic: DNS$SHARE.EXE is included in VMS v5.3 and above.
Since the file is obviously missing, at least from the SYS$SHARE directory,
either .1 or .4 is probably right--it was moved or deleted somehow.
To use MCC v1.1 you are going to have to get it back, and install it.
To install MCC v1.0 (why, at this point?), ditto.
