744.0. "DECmcc SMS on VAX4000/VT1300" by AUNTB::BIRMINGHAM (G.W. Birmingham, Carolinas District) Thu Feb 21 1991 09:54

I have a customer who plans to start with the DECmcc SMS configuration
today and migrate up to full DECmcc later. He would like to run it on the
VAX4000 platform and use a VT1300 Color X-Windows terminal for display.
According to the SPD (dtd November, 1990), nither the VAX4000 nor the
VT1300 terminal are listed as supported hardware.

    Question:

Is this a reasonable configuration and will it work ? (He is
balking at buying a VAxstation 3100, since the VT1300 will cost less,
and he already has the VAX4000).

If it will work, please indicate the location of documentation that
would describe how to do this. As always, thanks in advance for any and
    all comments, pointers, etc...

    Regards,
    George

Hi George,

I don't think the platform (VX4000) and UI (VT1300) will create any
problems of installing the products. However, the constraints really
is the amount of memory,CPU, and disk space.

If I find out more about the solution that your customer wanted, I will
	post it on this note.

Fred, did you mean you tested SMS or BMS? He is looking to use
    the SMS (site management system).

Whoops!, I preumptuously assumed he was talking about BMS.

In either case, I have both the BMS and EMS kit running on a VAX 6420
and displaying on a VT1300. Everything works fine with a few
exceptions such as the difference in fonts (100 dpi vs. 75 dpi) which
may be overlayed by some boxes in various dialog boxes. The
development people have been experimenting with the VT1300 on the 6000
to see what happens when displays of different programs show up on
screens with different resolutions. The VT1300 SPX that we use has a
    resolution of 1280x1026 pixels.

Claiming to support this stuff is a job for the Product Management
people to resolve. I would suspect both BMS and EMS (or SMS) will run
without any serious problems. If there are any problems it would most
likely come from the differences in screen resolution but the software
should still perform the data collection, etc.

You may want to check the EWS notes conference regarding the VT1300 and
possible load/performance issues relative to your host system. The EWS
notes conference is currently on HELIX::EWS
