709.0. "Not enough free disk to install BMS V1.1" by JUMP4::JOY (Get a life!) Mon Feb 11 1991 16:55

    I looked thru the notes back to the end of Nov. and didn't see this
    problem anywhere. Please excuse me if its there and I missed it. I'm
    trying to install V1.1 EFT on my 3100. I have 46000 free blocks on my
    system disk and about 300000 free blocks on the user disk. I created an
    [MCC] directory on the user disk to hold the files. During the
    installation when asked where to put the common files, I specify this
    directory on the user disk. According to the installation guide (I'm
    installing the BMS version), I need 13,000 free blocks on the system
    disk and 31,000 on the user disk. After I tell the installation
    procedure where to put the files, I get the fatal error about needing
    70,000 free block on the system disk and VMSINSTAL aborts. What am I
    doing wrong? Shouldn't I be able to install the files on the user disk?
    There is no way I can clean up enough space to have 70000+ block on my
    system disk.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
    Debbie

709.1I believe that was a bug, which got fixedTOOK::GUERTINE = mccMon Feb 11 1991 17:0710
    I believe that was a bug in the V1.1 EFT kit. It looked in your system
    disk for the available disk space even though you specified that you
    wanted most of disk space to be taken up on another disk. Is it
    possible for you to install the MCC v1.1 MCS kit (the 30 day SQM kit)
    instead? It's nicer and has fewer bugs! If not, perhaps specifying
    an Alternate Working Disk as an vmsinstal option
    AWD=myuserdisk:[tempdirectory] might do the trick.

    Good luck,
    -Matt.
709.2Use AWD in VMSINSTALWELLIN::MCCALLUMTue Feb 12 1991 04:1314

    There is another catch, you need working space for VMSINSTAL.
    Therefore if you do not explicitly state that you wish to use working
    space on another disk it will look for 70,000 blocks on the system
    disk for working space (nothing to do with MCC directory).

    There is an option with VMSINSTALL called AWD (alternate Working
    directory, added wityh VMS 5.2 ) which can be used to get this
    temporary space on to another disk.

    I haven't used with with MCC but it should work.

709.3AWD works fine on MCCTOOK::CAREYTue Feb 12 1991 09:3313

    I use AWD all the time with my VAXstation 2000. There isn't a lot of
    anything extra on this one, so the alternate working directory saves
    me.

    when VMSINSTAL asks "installation options you wish to use", just
    respond with AWD=DISK:[ACCOUNT].

    Works fine, but it seems to be important not to include any spaces
    around the equal sign.

    Thanks for all the replies. I'll try the AWD option.

    Re: .1 If I can use the DECmcc demo with the MCS version, I can install
    that just as easily. Where is it located? Same place as the BMS kits?

    Thanks

    the demo pointer for the latest kit is located in note 452.40 (and
    no it is not in the same location as the BMS kit).

    Also note that keywords have been extensively used throughout the
    notes file. Searching using these may cut down on future "checks"
    for already reported problems. (that's how I found the "demo" pointer)
