668.0. "SNMP questions." by MANIS2::MOELK (Rnar M. Moelk von ICELAND.) Tue Jan 29 1991 05:43

    	1) MIB II:

Is there a known date or ca. kw. when the SNMP with MIBII extension
    will be available?

    	2) Private MIB's:

Any information on which private MIB's the SNMP will be able to do
    in the V1.1?

    	3) Wellfleet:

Is Wellfleet going to do their own AM for managing their Bridges/Routers?
And if so is it possible to get some information about what they
    then will do?

    	4) SNIFFER:

Can you tell us if DEC is working with Network General on their
Sniffers? I.e. will there be a AM from NG or will we do it with
    the SNMP AM?
To this point I must add that our customer BASF will be using the
NG Sniffer as a "standard" tool or shall I say the only one that they
will accept for the lan anal. or trouble shooting.
I have allso heard that CS in US is going to implement/use the Sniffer
as a lan anal. tool. Is this right?

    	1) MIB II:

Is there a known date or ca. kw. when the SNMP with MIBII extension
    will be available?
>>>	We are planing to add MIB II support to the SNMP AM in the V1.2
timeframe. The plan for V1.2 to ship is Oct 1991.

    	2) Private MIB's:

Any information on which private MIB's the SNMP will be able to do
    in the V1.1?
>>>	Jon Goodridge, of the 3rd party group, is coming up with a
prioritized list of private extensions. Engineering will add
"some" (ie:4-9) private extensions to the SNMP AM in the V1.2
timeframe, more after V1.2. Contact Jon (TOOK::JSG) for his
	list.

    	3) Wellfleet:

Is Wellfleet going to do their own AM for managing their Bridges/Routers?
And if so is it possible to get some information about what they
    then will do?
>>>	The SNMP AM now in field test has the Wellfleet extension added
to it. It appears, from field test feedback, that Wellfleet
has changed the MIB between what we got and what is at customer
sites. We will be upgrading our MIB extension.

as a lan anal. tool. Is this right?
>>>	Steve Lane, product manager for the End-to-End traffioc
monitor, is doing a phase 0 requirements doc. We will be
investigating Network General to see if their product is what
we need and if so, how to integrate it into DECmcc. We are
also looking at a product called DECnms.

668.2More quest. about Wellfleet.MANIS2::MOELKRnar M. Moelk von ICELAND.Wed Jan 30 1991 08:5116

    	Thank's for your reply.

But what I was trying to ask about Wellfleet is:
if Wf is a Strategic Vendor then I would asume that Wf will want
to do their own AM. It is fine if we can do GET and some SET with
the SNMP AM then still the biggest part is missing for doing a
management on the Wf, that is the whole configuration/setup
procedure for the boxes and so on is missing and that I would
asume will be done from Wf AM. Any comment on that.
Our customer BASF is really waiting for that solution!!!!

Wellfleet is a strategic vendor because we asked them to be, and because
they understodd no real work was required of them. Simply help us
convert their private MIB into MSL, and help test.

Exactly what functions are you talking about? By what
protocol/mechanism is a Wellfleet router able to receive these
'real' management requests? Are these 'real' management requests
available through other vendor's management software?

My understanding is that Network General has defined a private MIB
and implemented an SNMP agent on/for the sniffer. If so then they
will gracefully decline writing an access module, since they
adhere to the current standard 'platform' ( that is, SNMP allows
one to be 'enrolled' into most standard management platforms like
	HP and Sun ).

We ( NME ) were looking into using the sniffer to gather packet
information required for an idea called the 'end-to-end traffic
monitor', hence the remarks in .1.

	Hope this helps,
	Mike
668.5Wellfleet - Mgmt.MANIS2::MOELKRnar M. Moelk von ICELAND.Tue Feb 05 1991 08:3213

About Wellfleet mgmt: The BASF AG, has now over 20 Wf's and Wf
has a interface for most of the common protocols, i.e. DECnet,
X.25 and so on. And to do the configuration they have to boot
a floppy from the b/router and then go through configuration menu
or they can Telnet to the b/router and do the setup/config. What they
would like to have is something like the Terminal Server Management,
that is; do it central f.ex. on the DECmcc and keep it simple so they
don't loose the overview. Yes the comparison to the TSM is very
    close to what is needed.
