533.0. "BJ's speech to Citicorp senior managers" by BSYBEE::EGOLF (John C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874) Mon Dec 10 1990 09:05

                          SCRIPT FOR B.J.'S SPEECH ON

                        HETEROGENEOUS NETWORK MANAGEMENT
                        --------------------------------

DIGITAL is committed to providing platforms and applications to
manage our customers' heterogeneous enterprise-wide networks.
At DECworld'88, we announced our Enterprise Management
Architecture (EMA) which defined our philosophy and framework
for managing heterogeneous networks. In November '89, we
announced the DECmcc family of products which implement the
Enterprise Management Architecture, along with the DECmcc
Systems Reference Manual (SRM) which specifies the Applications
Programming Interfaces (API) to DECmcc systems. Using the SRM
and the DECmcc Toolkit, other vendors can develop DECmcc
modules to manage their unique environments through the DECmcc
system. To date, twenty vendors have publicly announced their
support for EMA/DECmcc together with plans to develop DECmcc
modules. We expect the number of vendors endorsing DECmcc to
	rapidly increase over time.

I am pleased to announce that EMA-based DECmcc products shipped
on schedule last month (November 1990). Through a single
DECmcc system, you can now manage not only DIGITAL's
traditional DECnet/Ethernet/FDDI networks, but also TCP/IP
networks. In addition, we recently announced an agreement with
Systems Center Inc. (SCI) to jointly develop products to allow
interoperation of DECmcc systems with IBM's NetView and SCI's
Net/Master SNA Management products. So, through one
DECwindows-based graphical user-interface you will be able to
monitor and manage heterogeneous networking environments
consisting of DECnet, TCP/IP and SNA nodes. It should be noted
that DECmcc is not limited to just managing heterogeneous
networks; DECmcc is also the vehicle for systems management.
With that end it mind, we have submitted DECmcc to OSF for
adoption as the network and system management platform of
choice. DECmcc products are already shipping on the VMS
operating system, and will be available on the ULTRIX opera-
	ting system within one year.
