520.0. "Problem Creating Domains" by MAIL::CLAYTON (Merlin Clayton DTN 445-7217) Wed Dec 05 1990 09:56

I've recently installed DECmcc v1.1 and cannot create domains. When I issue a
"create Domain ..." command, I get the following error response:

The requested operation cannot be completed
                      MCC Service Error = 8, X1.0.1,
                                          %MCC-S-COMMON_EXCEPTIO, success with
                                          common exception reply,
                                          Register,
         				  Domain SWBT_NS:.sto ,
                                          Null Partition,
                                          Domain SWBT_NS:.sto ,
                                          The requested operation cannot be
                                          completed,
                                          Problem Persistence = Unclassfied Prob
lem,
                                          MCC Routine Error = %MCC-E-INV_ENTITY,
 invalid entity
                                          structure

I'm not sure if I'm using the correct syntax for the create domain command, or
if the DNS name space is set up correctly.

Can someone please offer some assistance?!

I'm in desperate need to get this up and running so I can familiarize myself
with the functions and concepts for an early January presentation and internal
training for district network people.

Thanks.

Merlin

Well, some of the standard clarification questions...

What is the command you entered:

It looks like you did it from the FCL: (yes/no)

Have you tried accessing DNS through something else to prove it
is accessible: (you can do a set mcc 0 responsible person="foo")

What version of MCC are you running:

Do you have any optional modules installed:

Jill,

I'm running v1.1 of MCC.

I've tried working from the command line interface, and also the Iconics
map interface. Same problem persist.

From the command line interface I THOUGHT I was entering a command like
"create domain .sto.stld". However, I try that now and I get a command
syntax error, and I can find nothing in Online Help or the documentation
to clarify the command syntax.

What doc set should I be looking at?

I only have the modules installed that are a part of v1.1 - no optional
modules are installed.

No. I Have not tried accessing DNS through something else to prove it
is accessible. Frankly, I'm not sure how to do that. A question about
DNS installation however: Can DNS be installed as a client on my VS3100
with access to a server elsewhere in the network? Or does MCC require
DNS server on the same node? Eventhough I went through the MCC college
(MCC 101,103,105), the DNS concepts and relationships are still a source
of confusion.

Any assistance that you can lend will be appreciated. My clock is ticking,
and I'm making no progress.

thanks.

Merlin

You do not need to have a DNS server on the MCC machine. However, you do need
the DNS client (which I believe is included in VMS V5.3 or higher). However,
if you only have the client, you don't have any good way of troubleshooting
DNS problems.

Some really basic checks you can make - can you access your DNS server at all?
A good test might be to do $MCR NCP SHOW KNOWN OBJECTS. You should see DNS$TA
and DNS$BACK in the list of objects. Make sure that the DNS Client (clerk) is
started on the machine.

If all that is okay, you should contact whomever supports the DNS server and
ensure that you have the appropriate privs to create entries in the .STO
directory.
