517.0. "Chipcom & Vitalink SNMP Mgt" by CSOA1::HORRIGAN () Tue Dec 04 1990 20:54

I've seen in a variety of notesfile entries that the MSU can use SNMP to
manage 3rd party devices. I haven't seen any specific comments on its ability
to manage Vitalink devices and Chipcom devices. As these are two very
important 3rd party vendors for Networks & Site Services projects, I'd like
to know what management may be performed on them from MSU. Representatives
from both firms have told me their products may be managed via SNMP.

I specifically interested in:	Vitalink TransLAN (all variants)
				Vitalink TransPATH (all variants)
				Chipcom ORnet Stars
				Chipcom ONline Hubs

Although both of these firms are EMA Strategic Vendors, the message I'm
getting from their representatives is that meaningful EMA-based management
will not be available anytime soon.

I'd also be interested in knowing what management may be performed from the
DECmcc Director via the SNMP AM to the above.

Regards, Chris H.

	Chris,

Let me discuss the DECmcc director.

Mike Daniele is in the process of upgrading the TCP/IP SNMP AM
to handle MIB II, 'certified' private extensions (tested and
proven to work), and the ability to add private snmp extensions
at the customer site. We will be including some number, like
10 - 15, private extensions as a part of the AM. Mike has
already included the Wellfleet support and is currently working
on Proteon. The list of which ones are or aren't included is
being prioritized by Jon Goodridge of the 3rd party group.
After Jon develops his list he will present it to the DECmcc
	program team for agreeement.

Digital has contractual agreements with Wellfleet and Proteon
so we are looking at ways to release the AM to the public
'earlier' than when ALL the above functionality is expected to
be available - V1.2 target ship date Sept 1991.

Hope this helps show our intended direction.

Let me be a bit more specific.

The next version of the DECmcc TCP/IP SNMP Access Module is in
pre phase 0. I believe we will support MIB II and some number of
private extensions. You have a chance to push for your vendors of
choice via the phase 0 process. The ability to add a new MIB
at a customer site is another issue entirely, which I do not expect
to be addressed in the next release.

But I could be wrong. There are no specific requirements yet, so
naturally no detailed plans. This reflects my ballpark feel regarding
the specific functions that have been mentioned.

	Regards,
	Mike
