490.0. "DNS Corrupt in READ_ME_FIRST.TXT?" by DWOVAX::64544::LICAUSE (Al Licause (338-5661)) Mon Nov 26 1990 17:05

I happened to be reading the READ_ME_FIRST.TXT file again after having
run V1.1.0 for a time now.

I ran across the following:

4. For DECnet Phase IV entities, to obtain line characteristics it is
required that the node be registered. When issuing the following
    commands:
              SHOW NODE4 0 LINE SVA-0 ALL CHAR
              SHOW NODE4 0 LINE * ALL CHAR

and you get the following results:

              - no such DNS attribute
              - no parent entity

either the node has not been registered or DNS is corrupt.

When I try to issue this command using either NODE4 0 or a valid
registered node name, I get the results you report in the .TXT file.

I just did a santity check of DNS with the hotline folks in Colorado
and all checks out fine.

Can someone tell me if the above statement in the .TXT file is true
and if so, just what is corrupt? All DNS attributes seem to be in
order.

Is it possible that the MCC installation does not register the nodes
properly?

490.1line speed error in IFT kitGOSTE::CALLANDERTue Nov 27 1990 09:3416
After the IFT kit shiped a problem was found with the decnet AM.
It was not able to set the line speed characteristics. I believe
this may be at the root of your problem.

Your note confused me slightly so let me just clarify a few things.
The only entity that gets registered at installation time if the
MCC entity itself. You must explicitly register any other entities
yourself (by using the iconic map interface this is done for you
the first time you attempt to "drop" a new entity on the map).

When doing a show for the line characteristics, the AM will attempt
to get the line speed from DNS, if you couldn't set it then it can't
be retrieved and therefore the error that you see. The EFT kit will
correct that. Watch note 3 for the kit announcement.

thanks very much for the information.

My main concern was that DNS might have been corrupted.
I did register all child entities as you suggest, but when I ran
across the note in the .TXT file and found that my system was
behaving exactly as mentioned, I became concerned.

Look forwared to the EFT kit.
