486.0. "Utilities to extract from DNS" by BSYBEE::EGOLF (John C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874) Thu Nov 22 1990 15:37
We had a request to be able to "copy a namespace from one
machine to another". We looked into DNS to see if there was a
way to do it and couldn't find a way. We had somebody, during
the hours of midnight and 5:00 in the morning, create a set of
command files to "read" the data out of DNS and construct a
DECmcc command file that could be used to load the data into
another namespace (or the same if it later became corrupted).
Listed below are pointers to these command files. The are
unsupported, and not perfect in all aspects although they do
seen to work. If interested, give them a try. As noted in
previous note when upgrading from IFT to EFT, Domains will need
to be recreated and reloaded.

486.1 | Rebuild all or part of namespace?? re: 485 and 486 | CEBADA::MCCLELLAND | Off in the ETHERnet | Thu Dec 06 1990 18:52 | 13 |
| I think I have carefully read the release notes and installation guide for the
external field test of DECmcc 1.1 and I can not find any references to
rebuilding all or part of the namespace. Could you clarify the need to rebuild
all or part of the namespace?
BTW, I did run the procedures to save the namespace before upgrading to EFT 1.1,
and attempted to run the resulting procedures against the system with errors
about entity already exists. I seem to be able to access most of my registered
systems via my maps and domains all created in IFT 1.1.
Thanks,
John

486.2 | | BSYBEE::EGOLF | John C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874 | Fri Dec 07 1990 16:30 | 18 |
| John,
You know the old expression, "If it ain't broke...".
The EFT version of DECmcc has had changes in the way the Domain
members are stored (so we could store many more). We, here in
engineering, found that we couldn't access some domain members
when upgrading from IFT to EFT.
If you're up and running, leave things alone. If you run into
problems with domains and/or domain members, delete all
existing domains
MCC> DELETE DOMAIN *
and then load the command procedure created by the extract
program.

486.3 | BSYBEE is gone | TOOK::MINTZ | LKG2-2 near pole X3, cube 6072, dtn 226-5033 | Tue Oct 27 1992 11:40 | 7 |
| Node BSYBEE has left with its owner, and is now in a hidden area.
If you think you are reaching it, your DECnet databse is probably out
of date.
Please see the NOTED::MCC-TOOLS conference for up to date
information on DECmcc utilities.
