Hello, I have read the following in an article from Linda Saytes (Strategic Market Analysis) on the analysis of NetView Version 2 that was announced by IBM on September 5, 1990 : " ... (I do not reproduce the entire article which is quite lengthly) ... o LAN Network Manager and NetView: the interface between the two is strong. Virtually all capabilities that could be done on NetView can be done on the LAN Network Manager. o IBM is in a joint development project with 3Com to address the management of heterogeneous LAN environment. This will probably be announced and implemented quickly on the LAN Network Manager. ..." We all know how important is PC Lan management for customers. We mentionned during DECworld/ville that we have agreements with 3COM (see above !), Microsoft. This is very good as they have PC Lan Managers. Is there any idea when something will come out from the pipe and that we will also be able to "announce and implement quickly" a integrated solution with DECmcc ? Thanks in advance, Marc.

Regarding PCLan management ... especially Token Ring, best to contact Karl Molander on NWACES::. His group has some work in progress in this general area. Regards, Mark | |||||

This will probably be .0> announced and implemented quickly on the LAN Network Manager. .0> IBM and 3COM have, previously, jointly announced plans to implement CMOL - ie. OSI CMIP over LLC (a LAN "protocol" that runs over 802-based LANs such as Token Ring and Ethernet). Assuming that is what they mean, then it is not a tremendous amount of work for us, or a third party, to implement CMOL support in an AM for DECmcc. However, I know of no current plans to do so, yet. I suspect that we would need to see some business justification before we would do any development along these lines. Note that our agreement with 3COM does not, as far as I am aware (and this is not an "official" comment), get into details about CMOL. Colin |
