| Yes, you need a working DECmcc system (including the DNS
namespace). Entities are REGISTERed in the namespace.
If you are using this for demos only, put the nameserver on
the workstation running DECmcc. In that way, you have a self
contained unit that can be carried or wheeled around from area
to area.

When I installed the MCCTCPIP010 kit, I had the same results. Appearently
this kit does not come with the icon data file that is needed. I then installed
the demo kit and noticed that the error disapeared in the demo account, but
when I ran it, I still had the error. I moved the MCC_SNMP_ICON.DAT out of the
demo account into the MCC_ICONS: directory and the problem went away.
RE. .5
I am in complete agreement with Claudia as to the perception problem of putting
all the managed entities in the ROOT of the namespace. I make it a point to
inform all who see the demo in the Dallas ACT that this is not the accepted
way to setup the management tool. I am in the process of building a "proper"
set of domains that follow the DECmcc guidelines. I do, however, find the demo
script usefull in learning about DECmcc. Also the prewritten rules that change
the icon color to red at alarm state is good show item.
IMHO,I think the demo should follow the DECmcc guidelines as published in
the documentation.

Remember, you're using the TCP/IP AM V1.0 kit, for installation
on DECmcc 1.0 platforms.
The fact that you can install it and run it over DECmcc 1.1 platforms
means the platform hasn't changed, not that the TCP/IP kit lacks
an icon.

No Doug, I meant the DECmcc platform for enrollable management modules
has NOT changed. The call interface, the run time support, etc. are
backwardly compatible with the V1.0 platform.
The fact that new PMs and FMs are around should be entirely transparent
to existing 1.0-based modules.

| Jill,
What you are probably seeing is that the map file contains the
entities, but the domain does not. You're right, you're
filtered to nothing. Now the questions is why is your domain
empty (not loaded)?
I assume when you installed the demo, you indicated that you
wanted the "ACT" center to be Littleton_Mass as opposed to
Houstin, or some other such site. If this is true, then Fred
is on the right track. From the comand line (FCL) do:
SHOW DOMAIN LITTLETON_MASS MEMBER *
What do you get? You should get a bunch of domains like EGOLF,
COLIN,STONE,VERNA,etc. If not try:
CREATE DOMAIN EGOLF
CREATE DOMAIN LITTLETON_MASS MEMBER (DOMAIN EGOLF)
SHOW DOMAIN LITTLETON_MASS MEMBER *
If it worked, you should at least have one member in your
domain which would prove your namespace is set up. If it did
work, the simplest thing would be to re-install the demo. If
it didn't work, check out your namespace.

| A typical problem that can lead to the symptoms you are seeing (and
I haven't seen this demo to know if this could be it), is that the
FCL doesn't care if the entity is registered unless you are trying
to address the entity via and identifier not known to the AM. On
the other hand the iconic map does care. You could simply have a
case where your entity isn't registered (some one deregistered it
or deleted it from the domain -- and not your map).

>> Yep, we're working on improving the performance. I just came
back from DECworld Japan and they had their system tuned very
well. They had a normal 3100, no SPX, RD54, 24M memory (I

The EFT demonstration package is now available. There are a
couple of things to note:
1) For those that had installed the IFT demonstration kit, the
command files and map will be re-customized. This is because
we have expanded to include Europe, and you can now choose a
European site instead of a US ACT city if you like. So the
WORLD, UNITED_STATES and <local city/country> will be deleted
and then re-loaded.
2) In the installation guide, there is a sample installation
documented. This is for a fresh install. If you are
upgrading, you will get the following message for the domains
on the LAN map as well as the ACT cities:
The requested operation cannot be completed
Entity Existence Info = Entity Exists
This is not an error.
3) This installation still loads DNS entities as before, into the
root directory. This may affect some users. While we are
planning on the option of loading entities into DNS
subdirectories in future releases of this demonstration kit, it
is not available now.

If you have created Alarms rule after 1st of November and then you
reset the system clock, you are aasking MIR show future data!
I would strongly recommend that you not change system clock.
Behaviour of MCC MMs (not just Alarms) is unpredictable once you
reset clock for such totally different time.
Can you possibly get new packs and restore the system clock to present

| re:.38
First of all, I would like to emphasize that local time is virtually
non-existent inside of MCC. This is because the local time is
immediately converted to Universal Coordinate Time as soon as it is parsed
by the User Interface, and the Universal Coordinate Time is converted
back to local time just before it is formatted for output. This means
that the operating MCC software knows little or nothing at all about
local time.
Now for the question:
If the user is careful to update the MCC_TDF logical when going from
EDT to EST and vice-versa, they MAY see some interesting behavior ONLY
for historical data displays, and Statistics.
If you collect historical data every 1 hour the time line may look
something like this:
Local Time UTC DATA
---------- ----------- ------------------------
1:00 6:00 111111
2:00 7:00 222222
EST to EDT (Set clock ahead an hour)
4:00 8:00 333333
5:00 9:00 444444
EDT to EST (set clock back an hour)
5:00 10:00 555555
6:00 11:00 666666
To simplify things lets say that at 3:00 you set your time ahead to
4:00. At the same time you modify the TDF to go from -5:00 to -4:00.
The next poll will compute the UTC to be four hours ahead, and
everything looks okay. Likewise, when you want to set your time back
at, say 6:00 to 5:00, if you modify the TDF to go from -4:00 to -5:00,
the next poll will compute the UTC to be five hours greater. And
everything looks correct in the database.
Now come the interesting part. If you ask to look at all data between
two points in time, we will use the CURRENT TDF to compute the local
times for the begin and end times. Ideally, we want to use the
HISTORICAL TDFs for the respective local times, but we do not have a
Historical TDF database.
Let's presume that it is now 7:00. If we ask for data between 4:00 and
6:00, the current TDF is -5:00. That translates into a request for
data between 9:00 and 11:00. But the data at 9:00 was actually
recorded at 5:00 local time. The reverse logical can be used to see
what happed when you are in EDT and ask for data which was recorded in
EST (left as an exercise for the reader).
The last time I spoke to a DTSS developer, this "feature" was also
visible in DTSS. This is because DTSS does not (at least on VMS)
remember historical TDF values. So, for example, if you asked DTSS to
give you the UTC time for 4:00 local time, it would return 9:00, not
8:00, because it uses the current TDF to compute it. (Perhaps they
have fixed this by now, I don't know.)
I hope this description was not too confusing.
-Matt.

452.45 | NOTICE: Quirks with the Installable Demo and async AMs. | MCDOUG::MCPHERSON | i'm only 5 foot one... | Tue May 21 1991 13:58 | 35 |
| Hi!
The DECmcc Installable demo kit seems to have a couple of side-effects
that I think people should know about. People at ACTs, please make note of
these items:
1) If you have added any "after market" AMs (e.g. Translan AM, Terminal
Server AM, etc) then you may have problems locating the bitmap files
when running the demo from the "DEMO" account. The reason for this is
that the LOGIN.COM for the demo accounts (that *I* have seen) redefined
MCC_ICONS: to a directory *other* than (the default) MCC_COMMON:.
This, in and of itself, is no problem as long as you (the user of the
demo kit) are aware that you will need to COPY the bitmap files for the
appropriate MCC_*_ICON.DAT files to wherever your incarnation of
MCC_ICONS: is.
I am mentioning this because I just got a call about this (about the
TRANSLAN AM) from an ACT and I also noticed that we just had a week or
so of trying to find a "phantom" icon for the TERM_SERVER AM at one of
our ACTs.
2) The "alternate" icons that are supplied for some of the entity
classes may be misleading. For example: You CANNOT simply choose the
alternate icon beneath the BRIDGE icon that says "Vitalink Translan" on
it and use it to (magically) communicate with a Translan Bridge; That
requires that you use the TRANSLAN AM not the BRIDGE AM.
These are pretty straightforward and should not be a problem for most
people, but I thought that it'd be a good idea to get the info out there.

| RE: 452.40
I have had some trouble printing the script file for the demo, i.e.
BSYBEE::DUA0:[PUBLIC]DECMCC_V11_DEMO_SCRIPTS.PS;1
I can only print 12 pages, all of them pertaining to the section
"Introduction to DECmcc". The ret of the file doesn't appear on printer.
Anyone with the same problem and some cure?
Thanks,
Mario

Here's my results in checking the MCC and DNS installations
before trying to install the demo. Note that the results
from the DNS test are not exactly what the demo installation
guide says is correct. Sure enough, when I run the installation
I get an accvio (log file showing the accvio available on request)
after it gets quite far along in the procedure.
What I'd like to know is, the installation guide says if you
have a problem, see the MCC notes file or the DNS notes file
or the documentation. Can you offer any pointers to specific
notes for this problem? I have no idea where to start.

| I tried registering NITWIZ again (since I had deregistered it
in the log shown in .48). This time I got one of the okay
responses, "entity exists". So I tried the installation and
got the same accvio. It always happens after it tries to
create NITWIZ_NS:.DECMCC (and gets the "entity exists" message).
I have looked in the installation guide and can't find a
message where it is trying to create MYNODE_NS:.DECMCC.
What's going on with my installation?

452.50 | Unexpected string for domain name is the problem | NETCUR::KORGEN | Master of my own density... DTN 226-7746 | Fri Jun 07 1991 14:23 | 19 |
| I have successfully installed the demonstration. The problem was not
so much in the installation procedure or in DECmcc (even though DECmcc
shouldn't accvio on a typo). The problem was in the documentation.
The installation guide should have said WHEN PROMPTED FOR AN A.C.T. CITY,
USE ONE OF THE NAMES FROM THE LIST PROVIDED BY THE INSTALLATION
PROCEDURE JUST BEFORE THE PROMPT, AND BE SURE TO TYPE IT CORRECTLY.
This advice should probably go in the intallation procedure as part
of the prompt for the city name. It is not immediately obvious why the
cities are being listed, especially if you happen to be giving the
demo somewhere other than at an A.C.T. center city. Color me dense,
but...
If I had correctly typed the name of a city from the list shown
just before the prompt, I would not have had any trouble
installing the demo.

452.51 | A few questions | NETCUR::KORGEN | Master of my own density... DTN 226-7746 | Tue Jun 11 1991 15:51 | 77 |
| I have tried the DECmcc 15-Minute Demo script and would like to report
a few problems I encountered. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong
or whether they have encountered similar problems?
1. Setting alarm rules.
"To show off alarms, you must first enable notification." Pull down
File and select Enable Notification."
Workstation blanks out top half of screen and informs me that
I have no privilege to write to the MIR.
>>> I was able to fix this by running MCR Authorize from the
SYSTEM account and entering GRANT/IDENT MCC DEMO. Why hasn't
anyone else reported this problem? Is this a fix I'll regret?
Is my installation of the demo or of MCC somehow abnormal?
2. Looking at child entities of the node.
"Double-click on MYNODE to show child entities,
double-click on Link, select several of
the Links by holding down shift key, etc.... Using the Operations
menu, do a Show Status."
So far, so good.
"When the window appears, pull down Navigation and select List. Select
the second item in the list box and click on Apply."
Message window appears saying "Management Window message:
C allocation error." This window continues to appear each
time I attempt this.
???
3. Showing recording and past time data.
"Now use the Historian and show the recordings started during the demo
introduction. Pull down Operations menu, select Operations, then
in Operations window, select Show Recording."
Show Recording does not appear in the list box. Needless to say,
I did indeed start both the historian batch job and the
historian recording of counters as specified in the instructions
before reaching this point.
???
4. Deleting Alarms and recording.
...
"Delete the recording by selecting MYNODE, pulling down Operations
and selecting Delete Recording."
Delete Recording does not appear in the list box.
???
5. Exiting the iconic map interface.
"Pull down File and select Close Window. A dialog box appears
... select No and you will exit from MCC."
The result is:
%XLIB-E-INSFMEM, insufficient dynamic memory
%SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, reason mask=04, virtual
address=00000000, PC=00344EE0, PSL=0BC00004
I am using the most recent release of the demo and the DECmcc
V1.1 SSB release. My first question is, what's happening here,
and my second question is, why not just say Quit instead
of Close Window?
???

452.52 | quotas | TOOK::CALLANDER | Jill Callander DTN 226-5316 | Tue Jun 11 1991 16:01 | 15 |
| first problem appears to be that you are running for an account with
insufficient resources. Check your pagefile size (at least 50K?), and
then check the limits on the account (a bit smaller than 50K -- assuming
you are on a workstation). Now are you the only one running, or is
pagefile shared? Check the release notes for more info on what the quotas
should be set to.
As to why the recording commands don't show up, well if they aren't on the
menu they aren't in the system. Are you sure you installed the BMS kit?
Check also that you don't have another version of MCC installed, and that
they two sets of files are both present. Also I remember seeing somewhere
that the demo puts the files in non-standard directories, make sure any
logicals you were asked to setup have been done.

452.54 | Resources fixed, but how 'bout that Ops menu? | NETCUR::KORGEN | Master of my own density... DTN 226-7746 | Wed Jun 12 1991 14:51 | 47 |
| Here is what I have found in answer to my questions. Can someone
explain why the List Box mode of the Operations menu appears to offer
a subset of the Pulldown mode operations?
2. Looking at child entities of the node.
> Message window appears saying "Management Window message:
> C allocation error." This window continues to appear each
> time I attempt this.
At John Egolf's suggestion, I got a local system manager to look
at the workstation I was using for testing and apparently the way
the system resources were set up was insufficient for DECmcc, not
to mention DECwindows etc. This problem went away after
various system configuration parameters were increased. It was not
the account (which was the DEMO account and so had whatever the
creators of the demo gave it for quotas) but the system that was
insufficiently configured.
3. Showing recording and past time data.
I still have been completely unsuccessful in getting Show Recording
to show up in the Operations list box. I quite definitely have the
BMS kit installed.
I have discovered that if I select Operations Mode->Pulldown from the
Operations menu, the Show Recording command *does* appear in the
Operations pulldown menu, along with a lot of other things that
don't appear in the Operations list box, such as Export, Show Export,
and so forth. *And* they all work.
I can only surmise that 1) there is a bug in the Iconic Map interface
such that not all possible operations are displaying in List Box mode, or
2) the demo script has a bug such that the first time it has you using
the Operations menu, it seems to imply that it wants you to use List Box
mode because it has you selecting the Operations option from the
Operations menu. Then it doesn't go on to tell you that, even if you use
List Box mode for most operations, you still need to use Pulldown mode for
certain specialized operations.
4. Deleting Alarms and recording.
Same as 3.
5. Exiting the iconic map interface.
Reconfiguring system parameters fixed this problem too.

The operations menu contains only the directives associated with the

selected, even though it may have a different icon, is a domain.
If you haven't already, do a Show Characteristics from
the iconic map. The management window will display the entity class
