423.0. "What you get for free by writing an AM" by DELNI::HEBENSTREIT () Fri Oct 19 1990 09:07
What You Get for Free with Your AM
----------------------------------
Colin Strutt
24th May 1990
This short note was prompted by the question:
"what capabilities does DECmcc provide when I add an Access Module".
Let us consider an Access Module that provides access to SQUIGGLE devices.
In approximately the DECmcc v1.1 timeframe, when you add an Access Module
into DECmcc, you will automatically get the following capabilities(*):
- you can identify specific SQUIGGLE resources
- you can "REGISTER" SQUIGGLE resources in the DECmcc environment
(ie. make them known to your DECmcc, and all other DECmcc's in
the same network
- you can represent SQUIGGLEs on an iconic (DECwindows) map
- you can display (primitive) management information about specific
named SQUIGGLEs
- you can modify (some subset of) management information in specific
named SQUIGGLEs
- you can request management actions be applied to specific named
SQUIGGLEs
- you can display information relating to unsolicited occurrences from
named SQUIGGLEs
- you can create DECmcc Alarm Rules that can be triggered on
particular detected conditions (polled or unsolicited) about
named SQUIGGLE resources
(Rule templates might be provided along with the AM for convenience).
- you can arrange to store, periodically, management information from
named SQUIGGLE resources inside DECmcc's historical data store in the
MIR, or extracted to an Rdb.
Subsequently the stored MIR data may be presented to DECmcc users or
used (processed) by DECmcc applications. The Rdb data may be
processed by any appropriate VIA, or similar, tools.
* The Small Print:
To be precise, these capabilities are achieved providing certain
services are provided by the Access Module.
Note that this list is not exhaustive - but remember: you get all the above
as part of DECmcc without the need to write additional FMs or PMs. Just add
your AM and away you go!
Of course, if you so desire, you may also write new, additional FMs and/or
PMs that make use of specific capabilities of the SQUIGGLE devices, and
perhaps other devices as well.
