| The best task to use the director for is as a watch dog for parameters
that can be seen thru an AM. With the DCL procedure usage out of
a fired alarm, you can do just about anything, including commands
back into the director.

| Ross,
The EIC in Newbury are seriously considering DECmcc as the director
for an integrated management tool to several standard VMS layered products,
configured in a high-volume, distributed fashion. I think that the actual
people cutting code probably have the same "hard-going" evaluation as
yourself. Despite that there's a conviction that it is an approach that
is sitting on top of the right architecture to succeed eventually.
You can stick anything in DNS (not sure how it's encoded though). DECmcc
is possibly not the best way to manipulate it. Unless it is truly "reference"
information, then it is arguable whether it should reside in DNS space. Store
basic network attributes and get any other attributes direct from the managed
object if possible.

| Ross,
If you want more information a direct phone conversation might help
get you going a bit quicker. There are many groups working on different
types of components, some in the mcc devlopement group and others
around the company and outside it. Depending upon what you looking
for a good starting point might be some one like John Egolf or Mark
Hebenstreit (two of our managers), who can put you in touch with
the appropriate people.
As to "free-format" attributes, the usefulness of MCC in this spaces
is very much dependent upon your definition of "free-format".

| Hello,
As Ross said in his base note, we are currently looking into
the possibility of using DECmcc as the management tool for
DECbank. However, time-to-market has become the critical
issue for us and we have some serious concerns about how long
it would take us to develop a DECbank AM. So...
Is there anyone in the UK who has actual experience of developing
an Access Module for DECmcc who wouldn't mind spending an hour or
so answering some of my question and stepping me thouth the AM
development process?
Thank in advance,
Alan

293.5 | INFO - check into the design framework | GOSTE::CALLANDER | | Thu Oct 04 1990 14:20 | 20 |
| Alan,
I would like you to note something when doing your anaylsis. Most
of the AM's to date were started prior to the release of the design
framework. This is now available, and will pretty much do all the
tedium of MCC setup for you. It will give you the shell (of an AM)
into which you can place your decbank intelligence.
I would suggest that you try to find some one who has used it. The
feedback we have received is quite positive. It supposedly (since
my devolopement preceded it, I haven't used it) cuts developement
down significantly. The toolkit Guide to Programming an MM walks
you through the modifications and extensions you need to make in
a step by step fashion. You should pick up a copy of it an give
it a quick once over as well.
