Hi, I've heard this problem/bug is being addressed in the QAR system but I would like to track it here and add my two cents. PROBLEM: When using the iconic map interface (MCC V1.1 IFT -X1.1) with the US map a severe performance problem occurs when the "navigation window" is brought up. The corresponding QAR for this problem is icon_int #125. SYMPTOMS: The performance is good with the US map until the navigation window is exposed. Then any movement of the pointer causes the mcc executable and the decw server to TOTALLY consume the cpu. QAR_response: suggested resetting some process quotas. Our quotas are already higher than the recommendation. MY TWO CENTS: I think the problem is with the mcc decwindows code. (note: I'm not a decwindows expert) Decwindow's applications respond to "expose events" from the window manager. I think for this problem that mcc is using the mouse movement expose event continuously as opposed to waiting for a "button depress". So tell me I'm wrong, but figure out what the problem is. Because until a solution is found the icon map interface is not really usable. Steve Houle Network Management Solutions Group IFT site for MCC

286.1 | Even the Finnish map (120 points only) is slow | EEMELI::VALTONEN | Tue Aug 28 1990 03:55 | 14
I noticed the same slowness with Iconic map. I've a VS3100/M38 and it runs 100% CPU busy, when I move the cursor in map window (not just navigation window). When I stop moving mouse CPU drops down to 4-5% level in 30 seconds (it stays at 100% that period). It's certainly just moving the cursor, not clicking it which seems to consume all CPU... Strange that this only happens when I've a background map in window - I use a simple map of 120 points, the world map is so much slower! Without the background map I've seen only <30% CPU figures! 286.2 | DECwindows? | EEMELI::VALTONEN | Tue Aug 28 1990 04:13 | 4
Monitoring the system shows that current top process is DECW$SERVER_0... It's using all the available CPU - up to 92%, only few percents are left for MCC and window processes.

Sorry for not letting you know that we are looking into it. In the mean time you can do three things that will help: 1) have a page file 0f at least 100k blocks 2) set virtualpagecnt to be 100,000 3) restart your server with the logical DECW$SERVER_PAGE_FILE = 100000 Fred |
