If you already received a description of DNS/MCC your are most likely
right that it was an early version. A lot of work has gone on in
updating this aspect of the documentation since the EFT releases.
I am not sure why it is ambiguos about the requirement though. My
udnerstanding was that you are required to have DNS. Why it might
not be so clear that we require it, is due to the fact that MCC
will run without it. BUT.....and it is a big one, ONLY the FCL PM
will work (DECwindows PM requires DNS); and your directive set will
be drastically reduced (register/deregister...and al reference
commands won't work).
As to what the easynet plans are I will have to defer that question.
If some one who has spoken to them has more info on that it would
be appreciate.

251.2 | MCC absolutely requires DNS | TOOK::STRUTT | Colin Strutt | Mon Aug 13 1990 15:00 | 14 |
| Let's be a littel clearer.
MCC requires DNS.
If you could possible make MCC work without DNS it would be nice for
you, but completely unsupported, and may not continue to work in future
versions the same way.
Thus, consider how you will start to use (the corporate) name space
as soon as possible. I assume you have "name czars" that can help you
get at your "part" of Digital's own name space?

| DNS is required to run MCC...
This requirement, to me, means that the network manager should have the
DNS Name Server and MCC on the same node. Otherwise, DECmcc is rendered
useless by any network problem affecting access to the name server (e.g.
DECnet problems, Ethernet problems, etc).
Jill's comment RE: drastically reduced directive set is, to me, a wash.
Given a problem reaching the name server, the SET/SHOW commands
supported by MCC would be useful in finding a network problem
(particularly a problem affecting low-level functions).
Perhaps we should be looking at a subsetted of MCC that would run without
the Name Server if a problem of DNS access occurred?

| Oops. How did 251.2 get in ahead of me!
Oh well, DNS is required to run MCC.

And also for the tiny subset of users who might want to run DECmcc on
an Ultrix system to manage TCP/IP, without DECnet?

| re: .1 as I understand it, the ultrix version of DNS will eventually
not require DECnet.
