When you register an entity, does the entity have to be up and running? I remember reading something about this but I can't find it now. I checked both the user documentation and the online help for bridges searching for the answer to the above question. It seems like every entity that supports registration directives documents those directives rather then the Registration FM documented in one place. Please correct me if I am wrong. One of the tests that I am doing is using MCC to configure the bridges in my testbed. All the bridges are powered up but the lines are disabled. The test starts out by registering all bridges then using the registered names to to enable all bridge lines. The test performs lots of show commands (all using the registered name), disables all lines, more shows, enables all lines, set a few bridge characteristics, and finally more show commands. Not one command worked correctly :-( Linda

179.1 | Entity must be accessible. | CHRISB::BRIENEN | Chris Brienen - DECmcc (non-DECnet) AMs | Wed Jul 11 1990 12:36 | 16 |
RE: Register REGISTER and Entity accessibility - An entity must be accessible at the time REGISTER is issued in order for the entity to successfully REGISTER. This applies to all entities (BRIDGE, STATION, NODE4, etc). The above fact appears to be missing from the Bridge and Ethernet Use books. It will be added for the DECmcc V1.0 released versions. If the test you are attempting is directed at Bridges which are all attached to the same segment (LAN), and the MCC Host System is also attached to that segment (LAN), then it should work fine. However, if the bridges are scattered about, some of the disabled lines might prevent management requests from reaching all of them (and thus result in the failures you are apparently seeing).
179.2 | first register never seems to work | DSTEG1::HUGHES | Wed Jul 11 1990 13:08 | 11
Thanks for your answer Chris. The first bridge, on the same LAN as the MCC host system, did not register successfully. The situation is exactly as you mentioned in your reply, all other bridges would not have received the management request since the first bridge's lines were disabled. It seems that every time I register an entity for the first time, the registration fails. Has anybody else noticed this? I love these difficult to reproduce problems that I seem to be experiencing quite often.

"Cannot communicate with target" is the error message I get when the entity is not up. Linda |
