Lost of our customers complain about difficulty of use of VAX P.S.I. security. PSI security is difficult and user interface is rather lousy. I've been discussing it now and then with PSI Engineering and their attitude is that VAX PSI provides a basic structure for security and providing fancy user interface was not in their business plans. Fair enough. Stand alone PSI security product wouldn't be justified either ( hm.. who knows ??). Anyway, now, with MCC we have a nice framework for that sort of products and maybe a reasonable business model as well .( I know nothing about it but assume that customers would be able to by a set of PM/FM/AM for providing a certain function, like PSI security). So, I have some ideas what functions system managers would like to have to manage PSI security. A future product would include a PM/FM and maybe an AM if not all security functions can be managed via CMIP. How shell one start such project ? Are there any MCC product managers looking for new MCC applications ? thanks for advice, Wlodek

I have forwarded your request to Hakim Dhilla and Daniel Holland, two of our product managers. Hopefully you will hear from them directly, or via this conference. jill

P.S.I. Engineering are offended by the "user interface is rather lousy" statement in .0 - if you can't be polite then please don't use public conferences. Eric

Oh, c'mon Eric ! The user interfaces is just bare bones. It gives you everything you need to fully control smallest item of the security. But the whole system and ACLs are too complex for customers. A similar concerns has been voiced in VMS community about ACLs for a long time. This is an opportunity for a product that hides internal complexities and mechanisms and provides functions in terms of customer needs . Translate statement like : "Disable access from all DTEs except this ones" to series of identifiers and ACLs creations . Market has changed, less technical people manage systems, something that was excellent and industry high tech few years ago is simply not acceptable today. wlodek ps. If you don't like the word "lousy", I'm sorry, it should have been "difficult to use or prohibitive". |
