63.1 | Use these files, not the FT training docs | WORDY::JONG | Steve Jong/TANO Pubs | Tue Mar 27 1990 17:49 | 10 |
| The hard-copy documentation distributed at the DECmcc Field Test
Training class in Merrimack was *not* the same as the EFT
documentation. The EFT documentation is more up to date and more
accurate. (I think I said this, but not clearly enough, perhaps.)
The PostScript files listed in the base note are the EFT documents.
You should replace your FT training documents with these files.
By the way, we recommend printing these files on LPS40 printers. LN03
printers are much slower.

| I would just like to add weight to the request for Bookreader format.
AT fieldtest Training we were told that this had not been looked at !!!
Comeon guys....at the CSCs we have killed enough trees to stock our
cubicles with manuals...let us do the correct thing and save some space and a
few trees in the process.
Can the documentation guys (Steve Jong) give us a time for this ??

This question was asked in note 57. The reply from Steve Jong
is located in note 57.11.
In short (since his response was short), he stated that he was
looking to the release after 1.1.

63.5 | Bookreader Support | DELNI::D_DIXON | | Tue Apr 10 1990 14:28 | 19 |

Here is our position on support for Bookreader.
DECmcc documentation is written using the Interleaf Workstation Publishing
tool. At present, TaN Publications is not satisfied that there is a
clean, reliable method to convert Interleaf source files to a format that
is compatible with Bookreader. By "clean" I mean a method that does not
involve the writers executing multiple intermediate steps to get a
compatible file, and not having extensive cleanup afterward.
We are working with Corporate User Publications (CUP) to make the Bookreader
code available to Interleaf. When it is available, Interleaf will generate
an application to permit conversion of Interleaf source files to Bookreader
files. At present we estimate that such a converter will not be available
before Q2FY91, assuming it's feasible to create one. Given that time
estimate, the current DECmcc project schedules, and our writer resources,
we cannot commit to supporting Bookreader before DECmcc V2.0 in October 91.

63.6 | Why INTERLEAF? | KYOA::KOCH | My brother did not lose the election | Wed Apr 11 1990 00:40 | 10 |
| Please excuse this question.
Why was the documentation done with Interleaf? Why not with
DOCUMENT?
DOCUMENT SDML files allows the creation of any type of output
such as MAIL, LINE, LN03, PS, or BOOKREADER.
Does this committment mean that the documentation will be
converted to DOCUMENT format for V2.0?
|
63.7 | A wise guy, eh? | WORDY::JONG | Steve Jong/TaN Pubs | Wed Apr 11 1990 17:33 | 11 |
| We chose Interleaf because it was the best tool for the job.
We chose not to use DOCUMENT because it cannot support the output we
wanted efficiently.
Our intention (not yet a committment) to make Bookreader files for
DECmcc V2.0 does not mean we will be using DOCUMENT for the books.
We plan to translate out Interleaf files into Bookreader format.
Gee, do you really want to ask that question, and start a DOCUMENT vs.
Interleaf rathole, in this conference? 8^)

63.8 | It is going to be real problem in my view... | KYOA::KOCH | My brother did not lose the election | Wed Apr 11 1990 18:30 | 30 |
| I am a pacifist at heart...
However, as I have found out recently the inability to have
documentation open in a window to answer customer questions
when demonstrating the current EMS product is a severe
handicap.
The technical group (Princeton Plasma Physics Lab) looked at
me strangely when I said the documentation was not available
via bookreader.
I expect that delaying this until V2.0 is going to be a real
handicap at this point. The ability to open a window to the
EMS station and have any workstation act as a display server
is going to be severely handicapped by the need to have
hardcopy documentation at the station I am using.
If there is any way this can be accelerated, I emphatically
request that it be done. The ability to use Bookreader to
access on-line documentation makes a workstation that much
more useful.
In general, having any Digital promotional document produced
for Bookreader compatability would give Digital a competitive
edge. Imagine for a second the ability to distribute free-of-
charge, the TaN Buyers Guide, Systems and Options Catalog,
and price lists, etc. for direct continuous customer access
via a CDROM...
Ah, then again, I can hope...

63.9 | Yes Please! | NSSG::R_SPENCE | | Fri Apr 13 1990 13:53 | 17 |
| I second the notion that at least the reference manuals and books
needed when modifying or adding entities should have priority in
getting to Bookreader. Aside from all the trees we save, having
the info available on-line really speeds up access to it and will
be very valuable for the network manager who is problem solving
under pressure. Paper books walk and the one you need is never
available.
The time when DEC will get the most payback from Bookreader formats I
think will be during V1.x when
- network managers will have to look things up the most
- DEC needs the best possible image presented to the customer
Please consider the manual effort needed to convert the most needed
books to be a worthwhile effort.

63.10 | How about the others . . .

| Do the documentation writers of EMS'/SMS' co-products (TSM, RBMS, et al) also
use tools that can't generate Bookreader output?
[I don't want to rub a wound by asking this question over and over in each
product's notes file, unless I must.]
Thanks!

I already asked this in each of the specific notesfiles. This was
over a month ago and the only response was from TSM. They use
DECwrite/Interleaf and their docs can't be converted, but the engineer who
replied said that this suggestion would be given to Product Management.

63.12 | DECMCC-INTRO-FINAL Print Problem | HGOVC::ANDREWWAITES | Gonna hit some HK mattress.. | Tue Aug 28 1990 23:52 | 17 |
| Hi,
When trying to print DECMCC-INTRO-FINAL.PS on my LN03Q I get a few
pages into the printout then...
%LPS-W-UNDEF, undefined: Name not known - offending command is
errfontno
It then flushes to end of file.
Is this me?
I am now trying to edit the PS and sort this out but perhaps
someone here can help.
thanks,

Total of 21 files, 97766 blocks.
We are not releasing to EFT several documents that will exist in the
final versions: Messages, Master Index, Getting Started for ULTRIX,
Getting Started for VMS, System Reference Manual Vols. I and II, and
Entity Model.
If you want to print the PostScript files duplex (two-sided, for
example on an LPS20 printer), they will work just fine. If you want
the print the PostScript files two-up (for example, on an LPS40
printer), print the file BLANK.PS as part of your print request, viz:
PRINT ... BLANK.PS, MCCUSE.PS
We are particularly interested in your reaction to the Bookreader files
we've made (experimentally) so far.
If you have any problems obtaining or printing the files, or if you
have any comments to offer about the documents, please feel free to
contact me.

The cover page says that this document is for DECmcc V1.1 and VMS V5.3.
Is there a DECmcc V1.2 version of this document for Ultrix?
