SQL MM installation bug.
Rdb 6.1
Sql/Services 6.1
SQL Multi Media 6.1
OpenVMS Alpha
.
PROBLEM:
.
Customer has successfully installed Rdb 6.1 and SQL/Services 6.1. She
also has an older version of SQL MM working on a vax cluster (she couldn't
tell me what version.) However, the SQL Multi Media 6.1 standard
installation fails with:
.
%VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product save set A ...
%VMSINSTAL-I-RELMOVED, Product's release notes have been moved to SYS$HELP.
%SQLMM-I-INFO, SQL Multimedia for Rdb installation prerequisites are being
checked.
* Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation? [NO]: yes
%VMSINSTAL-E-BADSPEC, File spec SQLMM$MSDOS:BLDCDA.BAT cannot be parsed
%VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of SQLMM V6.1 has failed.
.
I recreated this error on our VAX system here using the multiversion kit
so it seems to be a problem with the vax/axp mv and std kits both.
.
I've seen a similar error with an installation when it was trying to
place the file in a directory that did not exist. The workaround was to
create the directory before the installation. I had her look for file
bldcda.bat on her vax cluster so we could figure out what directory it
belongs in but she couldn't find it. Also this error is different from
the error I've seen in that it gives a directory location "sqlmm$msdos."
Maybe a logical is not being set up correctly?
WORKAROUND:
hat helped. I noticed the installation is trying to purge old msdos
and macintosh files. Since the customer's alpha had no previous version
of sqlmm installed, they did not have any of these old files and the
install was failing trying to find them.
I was able to recreate the problem here. Then I answered "NO" to the
question "purge files replaced by this installation" and the installation
succeeded. Gave customer the workaround. Since it is a new installation,
there are no files to purge anyway so saying yes should have no more
effect than saying no.
