144.0. "Add Web Agent Manual to Doc. Set !" by NOMAHS::SECRIST (Rdb WWS; [email protected]) Thu Feb 13 1997 10:42

We should have hardcopy documentation that is part of the
Rdb7 documentation set that is at least an introduction
to the web agent, its capabilities, and how to install it.
Many customers do not get to the HTML or do not realize
the kit is even there otherwise. At one site for security
reasons they aren't allowed to install any web tools on
a database server, but the http servers aren't necesessarily
places you could install the web agent on (like an RS/6000
running AIX) so the customers can't even evaluate what they
need to do to put it up, or if it would do what they wanted
to if they did. Although I don't prefer to get my news on
dead trees, there is still no replacing them for manuals you
regularly use or browsing in the margins of your job for
new things you're trying to evaluate or learn.

We've got a great tool here -- let's promote it effectively !
(In the meantime pointers to appropriate collateral along
these lines, especially at a public URL customers can see,
is appreciated.)

Regards,

I think we do promote the Web Agent pretty effectively. It's one of the
demos that we use at trade shows with a pretty flashy interface (The Rdb
Surf Shop :)

try

http://us.oracle.com/products/servers/rdb/html/fs_web.html

for a public URL. The Rdb home page off the Oracle Corporate home page is
always a good place to start.

144.2Thanks for the pointerNOMAHS::SECRISTRdb WWS; [email protected]Thu Feb 13 1997 15:3715

I'm glad to hear about the trade shows and didn't realize
there was a public URL for the demo -- that's great !

Perhaps the business rationale was that anybody who
couldn't figure out how to get to the HTML wouldn't
use the product anyway -- I have no idea. But customers
have expressed the sentiment that they need something
in hardcopy though to get their arms around really
using it, and I think that it would further promote our
product if we helped them out in this regard ;-)

144.3If they can't set up the docs how can they set up the db? :)BOUVS::OAKEYI'll take Clueless for $500, AlexThu Feb 13 1997 16:5413

Well, the rationale was more lack of available resources to produce the
hardcopy documentation :)

I believe that hardcopy is being discussed for future versions but don't
know that a decision has been reached yet.

I'll discuss this with the doc folks. Maybe we can put something in
that points folks to the HTML.
