We are a DEC VAR in Greece and we want your assistance on a subject

important customers. On this system we have installed Microfocus Cobol OSX
server v3.2. The AlphaServer is connected to an Ethernet LAN, and the users
connect to the system from PCs running some of them DOS and other
MS-Windows 95, with Esker's TUN Emul. The emulation we use is ansi.
The problem is with some keys, especially End and shifted function keys.
Also there is a problem with color attributes, which do not appear
normally, instead they appear as black and white. Also blink text is
displayed as not blinking. I tried several emulators, but they have the
same behaviour.
The previous application server our customer has been using was a PC server
running SCO UNIX 3.2v4. On that system there was no problems like those I
have described above. I tried to use the ansi section from SCO's
terminfo.src on DEC Alpha, but there is no improvement.
We would appreciate your prompt on these problems.
Best Regards

From: HYDRA::AXPDEVELOPER "[email protected]" 30-MAY-1997 18:31:19.33 To: [email protected] CC: AXPDEVELOPER Subj: RE: Keyboard mapping issues. Christos, I am not sure if you sent your request to other than the [email protected] email address. Our service is for members of Digital's ASAP Program (our support for ISVs program), which I am not able to find you being a member of. We help software developers regarding issues they are having with porting/migration and optimization issues on the Alpha platform. We do not typically provide product support type issues, as you have asked. The environment of PCs running terminal emulation software into an AlphaServer running Digital UNIX is something we do all the time, so I certainly do not understand what issue you are having. I assume you are running your emulators in VT100 mode? And that you have an appropriate /usr/share/lib/termcap for the emulator? It makes sense that the SCO box (an Intel PC) would behave a bit better out of the box than the Alpha, since the Alpha is expecting to have a VT100-style terminal and keyboard connected. I can't understand how the terminal color setup can possibly be due to the Alpha system. I would expect this to be on the emulator program setup on the PCs. Maybe I am not understanding the color issue, and the complete program environment. Can you tell me which terminal emulators you have tried? I am running an internally developed emulator at Digital with no issues. I am going from an Alpha PC (with PC style keyboard), to AlphaServers all the time. If we have one of the same (KEAterm for example), I could ask our system operator to see if things look fine for him. One thing to note, is that on the PC keyboard (mine at least), the end key maps to the "previous" key from the LK201 (classic VT100) keyboard. The terminal emulator will send the ASCII sequnce for that key, and Digital UNIX will interpret it in that fashion (ie: like the "previous" key, and not the "end" key as it is written on a typical PC keyboard. If this is the source of the issue, maybe you can acheive the desired results using the "dxkeycaps" and "xmodmap" programs supplied with Digital UNIX. You'll have to know a bit about the ASCII modes you want to send, etc. Christos -- as I said, since you are not an ASAP member, we cannot officially support you, and the question you are asking is not in our charter to support. Unfortunately, the issue may be complex which would require having the same setup as you have, also something we could not likely do for you. Please tell me whether the above regarding dxkeycaps and xmodmap get you any further to a solution. Our operations person will not be able to look at this until Monday at the earliest (it is the weekend just about now). If you have a Software Service agreement, you can call the Customer Support Center, and see if they can connect you to a group which you can have consult to you on this.
