Hu,
In my experience, Netscape in general is pretty buggy. On every
platform I've run it on (Digital Unix
and both Intel/NT and Alpha/NT) I've experienced random crashing of the
application. However, I've never
seen it crash the system altogether.
Since you don't provide any specific crash information, my answer is
necessarily general.
Your question/problem isn't really of a programming nature, so you
should probably pursue this through
normal Digital Customer Support channels. But, perhaps I can suggest a
few things to try before calling
them so you can tell them what you have tried. When you do call them,
they will want the data from
one of the crashes from the /var/adm/crash directory (vmunix, vmcore
and crash-data) in order to
diagnose the specific crash.
- You didn't say what graphics card your AlphaStation 255 has.
Maintenance releases of the device drivers for
Digital's 3D graphics boards are contained in the Open 3D product. You
could try downloading the latest
version (Version 4.3) from http://www.service.digital.com/open3d.
Download the tar file and untar it
in a temporary directory. De-install the current version of Open3D you
have installed and install the
new version instead. If you are unfamiliar with the process, see the
installation notes contained in
the tar file kit before you start. This may solve your problem if your
crash is related to a problem in
the graphics card device driver. Even if you don't have a license for
Open 3D installed and/or don't need
the 3D functionality of the Open 3D product, installing it gives you
the latest maintenance release
of the individual device drivers (including their 2D support).
- Unix 4.0B has a hefty size patch kit available for it. You should
contact Digital Customer Support
and request the latest Digital Unix 4.0B patch kit and install it. It
just might magically fix the
problem. If you call them, this is what they may have you do anyway to
see if it fixes your problem.
But, if you give them the crash data I mentioned above, they may be
able to tell you whether one of
the patches in the kit will fix your crashing problem or not.
Given the info you provided, that's about the best I can suggest right
now ....
Regards,
Jeff Donsbach
