Told him about the -ieee compiler switch and it's performance implications.
That pretty much answered his question. Took his contact info and said
I would send him more specifics (pointers to FAQ's and other documentation)
that could help as I found them.

Section 10.1.1 (at the end of the section) discusses floating point
exeception handling and it's performance implications.
Chapter 4 of the Assembly Language Programmer's Guide talks about
floating point exceptions as well.
