Brief Description of Problem:
-----------------------------
Wayne is experiencing problems with mail on Digital UNIX. He claims that
he has not been able to send or recieve mail from Digital UNIX system
in their heterogeneous environment.
I had him try out the following:
- check whether sendmail daemon is running on the system
Verified, yes it is running
- check if mail works locally
Veried it works
- check if he can ping the system on the network
Yes, he can do that. They are using NIS on Digital UNIX and also have
non-Digital system on the network which is used as a BIND name server.
- Check whether he can send mail to user@system_on_net.domain .
This fails.
- Had him do the same with mailx -v (verbose) user@system_on_net.domain
Mail connects to name server for name resolution and gets
"access denied" error.
- Also asked him to setup/verify his mailsetup and bindsetup to recheck
his configuration domain/nameserver setup etc.
- Check if he can send mail to user@name_server system
Yes, this works.
This looks like an issue on nameserver (non-Digital) system. May be
fire wall implementation is configured to block mail traffic.
Wayne now understands where to investigate further.
He will investigate their server implementation further and get back to
us it that does not still work.
Will keep call open for a while
