I use Digital Station 255 running Unix 4.0B. I am the only user of this
machine, but offen I am running out of memory. It seems the Xdec
    process
taking lots of memory, it simply do not release memory. Sometime it can
takes up to 90 MB memory. Is there some setting wrong with my machine.
I am both super user and normal user, I usually login an normal user.

    Regards.

    Hu -

What graphics card is installed in your system. If you do not know how
    to get
this information, then look at the back of the system. On the graphics
    card,
there will be a part number. Please write that down and send it to me.

Do you know if the graphics card is a 3D graphics card?

Is any 3D software loaded on this system, such as Open3D. If Open3D is
    loaded,
can you tell me the version number?

The Xdec process supports the start up of the X Server, for the X
    Window System
    server.

Subj: Second note - temporary fix to your problem

    Hu -

If you restart the window manager or reboot the system, this will force
    the
window manager process to be restarted. This will cause the memory to
    be
freed up for your use for other processes. This is a temporary work
    around
until I get more information from you from the message I just sent a
    few
    minutes ago. FYI, Brush Bradley.

Cirrus 3426, 512 kilo byte memory.

    Hu -

I have sent three requests asking what the model of your graphics card
    is in
your system. I do not have access to any database that will tell me
    what was
    originally ordered with your system.

There are currently five graphics cards that are supported by both DEC
    UNIX
and MS WNT on the AlphaStation 255. They are:

            model name
            PBXGB-AA PowerStorm 3D30 8 plane
            PBXGB-CA PowerStorm 4D20 24 plane with Z-buffer
            PBXGI-AA PowerStorm 4D40T 24 plane
PBXGC-AA ZLXp-L1 24 plane with DEC UNIX driver

    Press RETURN for more...

        #347 30-MAY-1997 18:51:08.08
    1997-05
PBXGC-AN ZLXp-L1 24 plane with MS WNT driver
PBXGC-BA ZLXp-L2 24 plane with DEC UNIX driver
PBXGC-BN ZLXp-L2 24 plane with MS WNT driver

Regardless of which of the cards you use, you need to make sure that
    you are
using the correct drivers for UNIX or MS WNT. If you are only getting
    16 colors
on MS WNT, it sounds like you have not loaded the correct graphics card
    driver
and it has defaulted to SVGA mode with 16 colors (the minimum number of
    colors
for these boards above should be 256 colors.)

I do not know of any graphics card call a "Cirrus 3426, with 512 KB
    memory."

At this point in time I do not think I can do anything more to help you
    and am
    closing this call.

If you believe that you have further questions, please log a new call
    with
enough details so that it can be answered.

Now it is very slow when I switch from Window to Window, something must

    Hu -

If you are using UNIX, there a two sets of CD's for media, one for the
    O/S
and a second set of CD's for layered products. This second set of CD's
    us
called the "Digital UNIX Alpha Software Product Library." In this
    second set
of CD's is software for Open3D. This is required for your PowerStorm
    3D30
card. In addition, you will also need a Digital UNIX license PAK for
    Open3D to
work correctly on your system. To pull the Open3D v4.2 kit, there is a
    Digital
    web site at -
            http://www.service.digital.com/open3d/#releasd
where you can download the Open3D v4.2 kit and release notes.

If you are using MS WNT, you will need to Graphics Support Services
    Software
License kit. To pull this kit, there is a Digital web site at -

    1997-06
            http://www.service.digital.com/open3d/#Released_NT

Note that you will also need to pull a special version of unzip to be
    able to
"unzip" the kit on your Digital Alpha system.

Both of these drivers need to be loaded. If you don't do this, you
    will get
bad graphics window performance and low resolution on MS WNT ie 16
    colors.

I hope this answers your questions. FYI, Brush.
