The problem we had was the same on any version of the alpha UNIX
workstations: 3.2G and 4.0. On any model of the lastest
workstation we had :ALPHA station 500 ALPHA station 255, And less on
the older ALPHA station 400, and ALPHA 300.
( we have 6 DEC wokstations here, and the situation is the same, in
any client's site )
Here you are the description of the problem:
Our software is realy close to the OS, it needs a large quantity of
mapped memory, every time you create an image you "allocate" new
regions of mapped memory, The time you observe to "obtain" this
memory ( mainly during the first access on that ), depend on the
quantity of ram and speed of the hard disk. But it happen somthing
very strange on the "accusated" computers: for a while ( more
than 15 seconds), every thing stop any access to disk to any scsi
bus conected peripherals. This situation do not disturb a text
file user, but an image user with 15 seconds loked machine every
minute, is not acceptable.
And it is perfectly reproductible, you take our software Cameleo ( it
was distributed for a while in his 2.20 version by digital on the box
of any new alpha work station under Unix.) you create an image about
10 Mb, you duplicate that ( select it and Alt-C ), depending your
configuration, your computer will stop evry two tree or four images.
( about one stop per minute ).
If you need more information please ask.
Best Regards,
Farhad ABEDINI
PS: if you don't find a version of Cameleo to check the problem, give
me please your physical address, I send a 2.33 version to you

Would your centre return the favor? For this performance problem, Nari feels
that the partner needs to visit a porting center. However, France is somewhat a
long drive. :-)
Please let me know if you will handle this problem.

Subj: Re Caldera Graphics - Camelo - performance problem
Folks,
Just to confirm that I'm looking into the above.
I couldn't find a copy of Camelo, so Farhad is mailing me a CD. Apparently he
can't send it over the net.
