Dear Sirs;
I have a problem with the following Fortran program under
DEC UNIX and DEC OpenVMS for AXP. Could you please verify if this
problem
has been fix in recent releases. This works OK on SUNOS, IBM/Irix,
HP/Ux.
program keyw
character*80 image
c --- Get image name
write (*, '('' enter image name: '',$)')
read (*,*) image
print *, image
end
The error message I get is:
"forrtl: severe: list-directed I/O syntax error, unit 5, file
/dev/ttyp4"
on OpenVMS is a traceback refering to the same problem.
Thanks
Nelson Zarate

| Greetings!
I had a chance to do a little research on this and crafted the message below
for Nelson. It sounds like he is more than a little out of rev with both
compilers, cheers...

Greetings!
Please verify your version numbers for me. The current release of "DIGITAL
Fortran for OpenVMS Alpha Systems" is V7.1 (as of the March '97 Software
Products Library). The current version of "Digital Fortran for Digital UNIX
Alpha Systems" is V4.1 (as of the April '97 Software Products Library).
Your message indicated you were running V3.4 on both platforms. If so, the
first thing to do is upgrade the compilers on both operating systems and see
if the problem still exists.
For access to the Software Products Libraries (for either operating system),
you can order one or both directly from 1-800-DIGITAL or use these products
from the "ASAP Sofware Developers Kit" (i.e. SDK). The details on the SDK's
provided by the ASAP program are at the following URL's:
http://www.partner.digital.com/www-swdev/pages/Home/ASAP/unix_sdk_content.html
(ASAP Digital UNIX SDK Content)
http://www.partner.digital.com/www-swdev/pages/Home/ASAP/ovms_sdk_content.html
(ASAP OpenVMS Alpha SDK content)
The SDK's currently supply the media, on-line documentation and licenses for
over 100 layered products of interest to developers. You can order one or both
of the SDK's by contacting your ASAP business relationship manager, cheers...

| Greetings!
Nelson sent me more mail asking if I could reproduce the problem (I can)
and if the newer compiler (and RTL) kit fixes the problem (it does). After
some research I sent him the following message, awaiting feedback...

Subj: Your ASAP call re: "Fortran V6.3-711" & "%FOR-F-LISIO_SYN" error...
Greetings!
Tony Swierkowski @ Digital here with some more questions re: the call you
logged with the ASAP program. I did find an OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 system with
Fortran V6.3 installed on it and reproduced the error you described.
I need some more details re: your configuration since I've already researched
this and suspect it is an RTL bug that showed up on OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 systems.
As you know the various languages RTL's ship with the base operating system and
the version of the compiler you have is okay on both OpenVMS Alpha V6.1 and
OpenVMS VAX V6.2, but the RTL that shipped with OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 exhibits the
symptoms you are seeing.
The Fortran V7.1 kit includes a new compiler *and* a new RTL (installed
separately) and you *must* install the RTL kit on any OpenVMS Alpha system
prior to V7.1 (it is also installed before you install the complier itself).
It's possible that the Fortran V7.0 kits (both compiler and new RTL) fixed this
problem as well, but I don't have access to a system with Fortran V7.0 on it,
nor do I have access to the Fortran V7.0 kits themselves anymore.
Also note that the base operating system doesn't appear to have the correct
RTL ship with it until OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 came out. I don't think OpenVMS
Alpha V7.0 had the updated RTL, so you'd still have to install the new compiler
and RTL kits to get your problem fixed.
Just out of curiousity, can you send me the following:
1) Operating System version:
"$ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT F$GETS("VERSION")"
2) The .ANL file output from:
"$ ANAL/IMAG/OUT=DEC_FORTRAN.ANL SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]DEC_FORTRAN.EXE"
3) The .ANL file output from:
"$ ANAL/IMAG/OUT=DEC$FORRTL.ANL SYS$SHARE:DEC$FORRTL.EXE"
4) Output from:
"$ INSTALL LIST/FULL SYS$SHARE:DEC$FORRTL"
5) Output from:
"$ DIR/FULL SYS$SHARE:DEC$FORRTL"
6) Output from:
"$ SHOW LOGICAL DEC$FORRTL"
Your best bet is to upgrade (both the compiler and the RTL) using the Fortran
V7.1 kit I noted earlier off the current Software Products Library, cheers...

| Greetings!
Given that Nelson hasn't gotten back to for over a week and I asked him
specifically to let me know if upgrading/installing the latest compiler and
RTL kit didn't fix his problem, I'm going to assume all is well. Call closed...
