From: COLE To: VBORMC::"[email protected]" CC: COLE Subj: RE: FWD: NT on Alpha Hu, >> The good news is that Windows NT workstation for Alpha is the same price and >> onthe same CD as the Intel version. This is also true for Windows NT ServerI >> do not have a Finnish price for it but If you go to your local PC >> supermarket, if you have such things, you should be able to pick it up off >> the shelf. > Do you means the NT on Alpha and on Intel processor are exactly the same? Yes, as near as it can be and that is very close. It uses the same source code, same structures, same APIs, only the instructions are different (but if you use FX!32 you can run Intel binaries on Alpha hardware. Check it out!!!). This may lead to some imcompatibilitues when developing device drivers and other such low level codes. > We are also mocrosoft's developing partner. Most of our programmers are > using Win NT. If I installed NT should I get support from Digital or > Microsoft? NT support, for both Alpha and Intel, comes from Microsoft. You can also get NT support from Digital if you have a support contract with us. However, if you are developing for Alpha NT you can get development support through the ASAP programme. > How NT is implemented on Alpha, it is on the Mach or directly on the > processor. I suppose that Digtial Unix and NT are applications on the > micro-kernal am I right? NT sits on top of a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). This is true for all versions of NT. We just have an Alpha HAL insted of an Intel HAL. There is no common micro-kernal between NT and Digital unix. > Can I running Digital Unix 4.0B and NT at the same time? No. You can run Digital unix and Windows NT on the same box but you have to re-boot between them. Infact in your case, owning a 255, you will also have to change the firmware each time you want to boot between NT and unix. This is not true for most other Alpha systems. > Does our ASAP member cover NT support. See above. I hope this helps. Regards, Simon |
