He reinstalled OVMS 7.1, he did a coinstall, installed licenses, and
he could register things on the network (DECNET), and then things
go awry. His machine is not configured as a workstation and he cannot
get windowing environment to run.

I told the caller that I would see what I could do to answer the question, but since it wasn't a development question on an Alpha system (he's installing on a vaxstation), I also recommended he give 1-800-DIGITAL a try, otherwise I couldn't guarantee a very quick response to the inquiry. sounds like he didn't install DECwindows Motif. Have him review the
Installation Manual, "3.4.8 Installing Windowing and Network Products".
