| Greetings!
I just spoke with Tim and they will attempt to upgrade their system firmware
this weekend. I also had a chance to research this a bit in COMETS and there
has been lots of activity re: Exabyte tape drives (assorted models). In a
nutshell something (as of of OpenVMS V6.1) changed in the way the operating
system deals with tape drives. Specifically the drive sets the EOM bit at BOT
and OpenVMS 6.1 (VAX and Alpha) no longer allows this. This explains why the
tape drive (both a real old unit and a relatively new unit) work fine on a
little VAX 400 - VLC still running OpenVMS V5.5-2, but fails when hooked up
to his AlphaStation. Blank tapes appear to hang during "$ INIT tape_dev: label"
command, but pre-INIT'ed tapes work fine. In any event, this requires new tape
drive microcode (and possibly changing switch setting on the tape depending on
make/model). I've advised Tim to go ahead and upgrade his console firmware
anyway, since they are down-rev, but to pursue the Exabyte microcode rev problem
through the CSC, call closed...
