-----------

     Good Morning,

I am doing a port of a UNIX product using your Software Migration
     Assistance program.

I'm just about done, and I am trying to set up our tape production
facility to cut tapes for Digital UNIX customers. We normally cut
tapes on an HP 9000/806 using its internal 4mm tape drive. We use
     a blocking factor of 1:

tar cbf 1 /dev/rmt/0m (on the hp)

I know the HP does not do compression. I haven't been able to get
the tapes to read on the Dec (I have a TLZ09 tape drive). I've been
     using  this read command:

        tar xvbf 1 /dev/rmt0l

     But I get an error:

        tar: [offset 0]: I/O Error

     Any suggestions?

     Thanks

     John Jensen

    John,

Your email has been received and your call log number is
    #1997-3465.

    Two questions:

What version of HP-UX are you creating the tapes on, and what
    version(s)
of Digital Unix are you trying to read the tapes back on?

    Regards,
    Jeff Donsbach

Sorry, one more question I should have asked the first time.

At what density is the tape created on the HP tape drive?
(Model number of the HP tape drive may be useful as well if you've
    got that...)

    Thanks,

Subject: Re[4]: tape drives and tar compatibility

We create the tape with a device designation of /dev/rmt/0m

When I look up /0m in the dfice files I see that it is defined to be:

"Medium density, autorewind, AT&T style close"

I couldn't find the model number (it's an internal drive).

     Is this what you need?

     Thanks,

     John

John,

All of the information you have provided us so far looks good...
To expediate this, looks like we'll have to refer you to the experts in
this area (at the CSC). As you know, our expertise is in providing
software engineering consultation for compiler issues. Sometimes we can
help outside our area of expertise (and are happy to do so if it is a
problem we have encountered here). But this is not something we've seen...

Before contacting the CSC (1-800-354-9000):

Take a look at the error log to see if it can help you identify the specific
error. To do so, use uerf to format the error log using the option "-o full".

Check your firmware revision and make sure you are up-to-date. There seemed
to be problems related to a02 which are fixed with a03, which may help you
resolve this issue.

Be aware there are patches for 4.0a, and apply them if possible.

Good luck!

A followup conversation with John Jenson indicates they followed my
suggestion of contacting the experts at the CSC and have been working
with them. The problem has been difficult for the CSC to resolve.
For the time being Quest will cut tapes for Digital system off of the
    Digital system.

John seems satisfied with the way the problem has been handled.
