Leo,
This gentleman needs to cross mount his drives between DUX, OVMS, and NT.
He currently does development on VMS, and hten copies the changes down to
either UNIX or NT. he is running samba on his UNIX boxes, so NT can access
those drives.
He has UCX, so I thought he could run UCX and Pathworks (?) on VMS to serve
the NT and UNIX systems. Below he talks about having the NT system be the
server. He has seed systems, so he has all the UNIX and VMS licenses in the
PAK scripts we have.
Don't worry about the "stability" issues. They are more his inexperience.
Anyway, can you call him, and make some recommendations (for easiest setup
and ongoing maintainance)? He's a really nice guy, and listens well.
Please confirm once he is all set.
thanks,
-jeff

Jeff -
Thanks for helping me last night to set up the Unix system. I forwarded
the latest porting issues on to Pat.
As you requested, I am sending a note for your advice on how we might
better use our DEC equipment so it will be more stable and there will be
less configuration efforts as seed units come and go.
Here is what we have, all connected on a local area network:
1) Alpha 3000 model 300 running VMS
64 Mb memory
RZ26 (1Gb) runs VMS 6.1 (stable)
RZ28 (2Gb) runs VMS 7.0 (almost)
This is the primary development system. Stores data. Use EDT as primary
editor. Only problem is UCX license keeps terminating.
2) Alpha 3000 model 300 running UNIX
64 Mb memory
RZ26 (1Gb) runs Unix 3.2 (stable)
RZ28 (1Gb) runs Unix 4.0b (seems good)
3) MicroVAX II's
Three of them in various parted out configurations. Needed to decnet to
VMS system (1) when UCX license expires and to write TK 50 tapes for 1
customer.
4) DEC Prioris XL5100DP (2 Pentium processors)
Runs NT 4.0. Used for desktop applications, including telnet to other
systems. Unix disks are cross mounted.
5) Seed unit(s). Keep changing. Current is a 4/233 workstation. Changing
to an ev5 system with 3 disks (vms, unix and nt).
There is an ISDN connection to the HUB for internet access. All
development on other platforms occurs over the Internet (SGI, CRAY, HP,
IBM, CONVEX).
I have not experimented with NFS, but it seems that it would be nicer if
one of these machines (maybe the NT system) could keep all the data and the
others could directly access it.
Any suggestions on how to make life simpler will be appreciated.
Thanks again for your help
Ron

| I asked Leo to pick this up to make recommendations regarding how Ron
can cross-mount his UNIX-VMS-NT systems. The stabilty issues are
really Ron's inexperience (confirmed during a call to Ron, he is all
set in this regard), and do not require action.
