Subject: Copy Command Under OSF1 vs. other UNIX

Hi,

We have noticed a difference in the result of the copy command between
OSF1 UNIX and other UNIX versions.

When performing cp -r ~dir1-name/dir2-name/ <current-directory> the
result under OSF1 v3.2 is that dir2-name does not get copied. All of the
files and directories (including the dot (.) files) under dir2-name, get
copied into the current directory.

With our other UNIX versions (Solaris 2.x, HP-UX 9x and 10x, AIX 1.4.0,
and UNIX_SV 4.0), dir2-name is copied into the current directory and
within it, all of its files.

The following is an example:

	cd /tmp
	cp -r ~dkelly/main_dir/ .

          			|	Solaris 2.x, AIX 1.4.0,
           D.E.C. OSF1 |	HP-UX 9.x & 10.x, UNIX_SV 4.0

Daphne,

re. "cp -r' behaviour difference on Digital UNIX

I have raised a QAR (quality assurance report) for this
problem, #52182.

I will let you know when I get a response, though it might be
a week or two.

I assume that you can work around it for now by removing the
trailing "\" from the source-directory.

Regards,
  John Wood

Hello Daphne,

re. a problem you reported last month about different behaviour
of "cp -r" with "dir" and "dir/":

This fix is scheduled to be in the v4.next release of Digital UNIX.
Currently this release is likely to be called v4.2, and won't be
available for probably 6 months or so.

regards,
  John Wood
