Simon,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
(1) I did not complete the FIS of V4.
(2) I did try to load 3.2D on the same disks.
(3) I tried to load it as a new install.
(4) The message was "trap: invalid memory read access from kernel mode"
(5) The version of the firmware is "6.2-2 Aug 7 1996 11:55:31"
(6) The inputs I gave were "boot dka400", "1" (basic installation), and
"1" (disk zd0).
I would appreciate any help you can render.

Jeffrey,
Can you give me a bit more information on your problem with loading 3.2d.
1) Did you complete the FIS of V4?
2) Did you try to load 3.2d on the same disk as V4?
3) Did you try to load the software as a new install or as an upgrade?
4) What exactly was the error message generated.
5) What version of firmware is loaded? (you can get this from the <<<
prompt by
typing SHOW)
6) Can you forward to me the inputs you gave before it crashed.
Many thanks,
Simon

| Greetings!
In response to some mail Simon sent that I think is relevant to this call, I
just him the following message. The "firmware" URL described below really helps
to answer the multitude of firmware vs platform vs OS rev level possibilities,
cheers...

Greetings!
If this is in response to the reply I posted yesterday to your base note
(i.e. # 3392.0), then I believe the answer is no. I do not maintain any kind
of inventory of software. You can order back revs (up to a point) of most
products from the SSB as a special order.
As to the feedback you solicited, you need more detail on the firmware rev
levels (via ">>> SH CONFIG"). If memory serves they probably ought to be using
at least the firmware for their specific platform that was on the "Firmware
Update Utility CD-ROM" V3.4 (we're currently at V3.9).
Normally, the customer shouldn't have problems using newer firmware (i.e.
whatever came with the FIS V4.0 operating system) with an older operating
system (i.e. V3.2D-[any]. Having said that, it appears that the firmware on
the V3.7 "Firmware Update Utility CD-ROM" may not play nice with V3.2[any] on
some systems. See the attached notes, I pulled out of COMETS for details,
but I'd make sure the customer either uses a V3.4 "Firmware Update Utility
CD-ROM" (this presumbly shipped with V3.2D[any] kit) or jump straight to using
a V3.8 (or V3.9) "Firmware Update Utility CD-ROM", hope this helps...

Hi there
I have just installed v3.7 of firmware for a v4.0a unix install.
I needed to go back to v3.2d of unix but am unable to get the
unix install disk going. I get this message:
trap: invalid memory read access from kernel mode
blah... blah... blah...
Do I need to downgrade the firmware to use unix v3.2c? What
other things should I look at?
Thanks
Andrew

What platform are you running (e.g. AlphaServer 1000, 1000A,...)?
I've encountered similar problems with a mismatch between firmware
revision level and OS revision level when moving between OS 3.n and
OS 4.n on the 1000's and 1000A's, but I haven't tried to install
older OS bits with newer firmware. It's not at all unreasonable to
assume that you should back down the firmware level to correspond
with the OS's expectations. Check
http://www.zk3.dec.com/uhs/fw/fwinfo.cgi/
for an ask-and-you-shall-receive page that matches OS and firmware
levels.

Hello,
AlphaStation 200/100 with F/W V6.2-2 (OSF PAL X1.46-2) can not install
Digital UNIX V3.2G,attached as bellow. Panic occurred on 'finder' process.
It can install V3.2G with previous release of firmware V6.1-2.
I got V6.2-2 firmware from ftp.digital.com:/pub/Digital/Alpha/firmware/v3.7.
Is this V6.2-2 firmware's bug ??
Any suggestions.

Is there any solution for this problem ?
Does a FW downgrade solve the problem ?
Many greetings

Here is the answer I got when I asked our firmware folks:
Yes this is a problem with 6.2-2. It will be fixed for the 3.8 cd.
There is also a field blitz on this as well. Problem only occurs with
6.2-2 and unix 3.2 install.

Hi,
So the answer is "downgrade to V3.6 until V3.8 is release?"
I've not done this before, and am wondering if the firmware
update utility will even let you do this. So I'm just double-checking.
Thanks!

I don't think the firmware update is picky enough not to let you
downgrade the firmware.

P.S. So who is going to answer all my questions on
TGA2 and S3 Trio??? :-)
