Brief Description of Problem:

This is a loaner AlphaServer and they can't install Windows NT. Firmware has
been upgraded to V4.50 961003.137. The OS_OPTION has been set to Windows NT.
They start the install from CD, the ARC menu comes up, chose install from CD,
it can't detect machine type but they chose the "2x00 5/xxx" from the list of
families, starts to load some of the NT files and then tries to start the
kernel, gets a blue screen error "Setup has encountered a fatal error..." with
status codes: 0x4, 0x1, 0,0. They've tried both Windows NT Server 3.51 and
4.0 - no joy. Telephone tag in progress...

I stripped off the pertinent bits and sent the message below to him while I had him on the phone, awaiting feedback... Your diagnostic information was a great help and per an internal troubleshooting database I discoverd the following (sanitized by me to protect the guilty): <--- begin snippet on original call ---> P:Installing NT on Alpha 2000, getting 0x4, 0x1, 0, 0 \+----------------------- Beginning of Screener's Text -----------------------+ \alpha 2000, at boot prompt \selects for install wnt from cdrom, fails setup has encountered a fatal error \(x4,0x1,0,0) \+--------------------------- End of Screener's Text --------------------------+ He has several drives that are not partitioned yet. This is a common error (due to virus checking) He can 1. pop the additional drives, install, then partition them or 2. partition them now and install <--- end snippet on original call ---> Let me know if this helps.
