Brief Description of Problem:
-----------------------------
System Questions
We are porting a Unix application to the DEC Alpha, and have some system
questions to complete our installation and setup documentation.
There are presumably answers to these buried in Digital documentation
somewhere but we have been unable to find them.
The questions involve commonly-encountered configuration limits, which
certain large installations of ours sometimes exceed, such that kernel
reconfiguration is required. This sort of parameter setting is always
wildly different on different implementations of Unix.
Our question is "Do these entities have settable limits; and, if so, how
does one set them?".
1) Maximum size of a file for writing (frequently called ULIMIT, or
CDLIMIT).
2) Maximum size of a Shared Memory Partition (usually called SHMSIZE or
SHMMAX).
3) Maximum number of Semaphore Undo Structures in the system (usually
called SEMMNU)
Our Kernel file helpfully recommends consulting a manual named Guide to
System Administration, but no such manual was contained in the kit we
received when we purchased our system.
We would be grateful if you could help with these questions.

| 3239.1 | Really should read the System Admin manual, but... | AMCUCS::SWIERKOWSKI | Quot homines tot sententiae | Wed Feb 26 1997 18:48 | 45 |
Greetings!
The "System Adminstration" manual, Chapter 4 (Section 4.5) discusses the
static configuration files. Figure 4.1 shows the directory hierarchy for the
kernel configuration files for the generic and target kernels. The following
4.5.n sections describe each one in more detail.
Specific to your customer's questions:
> 1) Maximum size of a file for writing (frequently called ULIMIT, or
> CDLIMIT).
Not sure which configuration file defines this (if any?).
> 2) Maximum size of a Shared Memory Partition (usually called SHMSIZE or
> SHMMAX).
see Table 4-2 & Section 4.6.1.5
> 3) Maximum number of Semaphore Undo Structures in the system (usually
> called SEMMNU)
see Table 4-2 & Section 4.6.1.5 (I think it is spelled "semume").

A hardcopy manual is nice but in the interim, see the online doc set linked
off the external ASAP server if they don't have the Documentation Set CD-ROM
that should have accompanied the distribution kit for the OS:
