p.s. Note that they are trying to install dec c++ 5.1. I would contact them
and see what version of dunix they are installing it on. Then I would
check to see that the prerequisite libraries are installed on their
system: CXXSHRDAnnn, CXXBASEAnnn, and CXXHRDAnnn. Sounds like the
prerequisite c++ libs are either corrupted or not installed.

    Janet,

Your e-mail requesting help with DEC C++ compiler problems on Digital UNIX
was forwarded to our group, Software Partner Engineering. Would you please
send the following information to help us diagnose the problem:

    1) the output from the command "setld -i | grep CXX"
    2) the output from "uname -a"

Please send this info to [email protected].

Also, please note that the current version of the DEC C++ compiler is v5.5.
This can be found on the Digital UNIX Software Product Library, January
    1997.
You may want to try using the latest version of the compiler. We can supply
this to you if you need a copy.

I think we've found the problem with the C++ compiler. There is a known
problem with the v5.1-1 compiler on EV5 systems. This is fixed in the
v5.1-6 compiler. I'm getting a copy of this now for testing. Can you
please confirm that you have the v5.1-1 compiler?

    Title: V5.1-6 update kit available

A V5.1 update kit is available that corrects a problem that occurred
on some EV5 systems. The problem caused the compiler to crash when
compiling many programs, including the installation verification
program that is compiled when you use setld -v. The crash resulted
    in the following message:

11, fatal: A bugcheck occurred in the compiler.

The compiler ident for this updated compiler is V5.1-6.
The kit is also available via the Digital Intranet
    at http://www.zk3.dec.com/decc/decc-kitinfo.html

Let me know if this works for you.

    Janet,

To get the compiler version, try cxx -V or cxx -source_listing. The
-source_listing switch will create a .lis file and the first line will
contain the compiler version. Not sure if either of these will work on
your system, given the current state of the compiler, but give it a try.
Fortunately I have an EV4 system where the compiler isn't broken, so I
was able to get the version number there. My EV5 system is down right now,
but I hope to have it working after lunch and will try out the new
compiler - the engineering folks are pretty sure that this will fix the
    problem.

Subj: info on compiler and OS version

    Janet,

While the V5.1-6 compiler is expected to fix the problem, the compiler group
does strongly recommend upgrading to the v5.5 compiler if at all possible.
Here are the reasons they gave:

"There are some advantages to going to V5.5. One is obviously
that it's the supported compiler. Another is that it uses the
GEM optimizing backend. We've seen better performance and smaller
object size with the new compiler. I might think those would
    be of interest to SDRC."

Also, if you are using Open3D v4.2, then you probably should upgrade the
operating system to Digital UNIX v4.0A or v4.0B. My understanding is that
Open3D v4.2 is supported on Digital UNIX v4.0A and above. You can confirm
    this with George Chaltas.
