The customer can use whatever he wants. If the drive is
compliant to the SCSI-2 specification, it is likely that
it will work reasonably. If he wants Digital's support
and approval, wait until we sell a 9 GB drive that has
been through our qualification process.
The capacity won't cause any problems, but the heat might
depending on the system.

| Greetings!
Just an "FYI" since I don't know how public this is yet but the latest
"Storage Initiative Newsletter" I got this week makes note of a 9.1 GB disk
built by those wonderful StorageWorks kids, cheers...

P.S. The following was cut from an "*** DIGITAL INTERNAL ***" newsletter,
so be careful discussing details for now (I haven't seen a press
release for it yet)...

a Sales Update article
A new 9.1Gbyte, SCSI-2 disk drive in a 3.5-inch form factor at a 7200 RPM
speed is the highest capacity StorageWorks disk drive. This addition to our
current family of disks offers the customer a greater variety of capacity
points and performance characteristics that can be matched to the system or
application environment. In addition, this generation of disks encompass many
new technologies. The 9.1GB disk will initially be available in SBBs and will
operate in JBOD, RAID5, RAID5 sparesets and stripesets configurations. The
9.1GB disk will require HSOF 3.1/5.1 for supported HSZ40, HSD40, HSJ40, HSZ50,
HSJ50 and HSD50 controllers.
Key Features:
- 9.1GB (1.6"), 3.5" SBB
- Extra-high performance SCSI 7200 RPM models
- Data transfer rates up to 10Mbytes/sec; Average seeks as fast as 8msec
- Tagged command queuing and multi-initiator support
- Leading edge technology: Magneto-Resistive(MR) heads, and embedded servo
- ECC on-the-fly error correction
- Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) capable
Benefits:
- 2.1 times the capacity of past capacity leader - 4 GB disk drive
- Lower cost per megabyte for lower system cost
- Smaller system footprint for lower operating costs
- Investment protection -- StorageWorks enclosures
- Back by a industry-leading five-year warranty
- Easy to use - Install, hot-swap and reconfigure without tools
Product positioning
The DS-RZ40-VA has similar form, fit, and function (2 times the capacity) as
the existing RZ29B-VA. The DS-RZ40-VA is easily integrated into StorageWorks
family of modular, flexible 3.5" disk drive storage subsystems. However, it
is not supported in the BA356-KC pedestal, but can be used in any of the
SW300/500/800 cabinets.
