Subj:	AVS Needs Help

Mike, I just received this message from AVS. I've also forwarded it to
Bill DeSimone. How can we help them?

Regards,
Russ

Subj:	Support for Digital UNIX 4.0

Russ,
Jim Aucoin is in Japan this week, so I thought I would appeal to you directly.

We've been having some real problems with porting AVS/Express to Digital
UNIX 4.0. We've tried contacting your technical support, but after a long
wait (6 weeks!) the response we got was basically RTFM.

There are two primary problems we are having:

1) The handling of C++ templates changed big time between 3.2.5 and 4.0,
and is very non-standard compared to other UNIX platforms (eg. SGI, IBM,
Sun, HP). I don't understand the technical details, but we've had some of
our best people on this problem for months, and we still can't make a solid
build. Can we talk to an engineer in your Compiler group. This is very
critical.

2) In moving from 4.0a to 4.0b we've noticed some very strange behavior in
the Motif event handling. Has anyone else reported problems with 4.0b? It
renders a key part of our program unusable, our standard command line
interpreter.

Russ, any help you can give us in this matter is appreciated. We have
critical customers who need support for Digital UNIX, and we are not going
to be able to deliver on our current course. It is already looking like we
will not be able to include Digital UNIX support in our initial release of
AVS/Express 3.1 without major miracles, since we have not been able to get
even a Beta candidate of AVS/Express 3.1 produced.

Thanks,
--Steve
