Heinz,
have you checked adaptec's web site? they are the ones that provide the
driver. i'm not sure if the driver is provided on the nt distribution cdrom (i
don't have one avail in front of me at the moment). The scanner is supported on
nt and Alpha so there is a driver available somewhere. i'll see if i can
locate one.

Heinz,
There is no ASPI driver for Alpha for available yet for the built-in
NCR* adapter. You will need to purchase one of the supported SCSI
Adapter boards for Alpha (see www.microsoft.com/hwtest) to use your scanner.

I checked out Adaptec's Website as well as NCR's and the DEC site but I did not
find anything about ASPI concerning Alpha NT, neither 3.51 nor 4.0.
I hope your lucky to find the driver.
Thanks.

| Re .0,
At this time, ASPI32 is not available on Alpha Windows NT. There is an
active effort undertaken by DECwest Engineering and Adaptec to make it
happen. We do not have anything that can be reported yet.
The HP ScanJet can be attached to any standard SCSI adapter currently
supported on Alpha NT. It does not have to be connected to one made by
Adaptec. It did not work, however, because the DeskScan V2.3 or later
requires ASPI which is not available on Alpha NT.
You should not use the SCSI adapter card comes with the ScanJet since
there may not be a compatible SCSI driver for it on Alpha NT. That's
why DeskScan V2.2 did not work.
If the ScanJet is connected to the built-in SCSI port on the Alpha NT
system and DeskScan V2.2 is installed, that combination will work on NT
4.0. Due to a MS bug, there is an extra step (send me mail) needed to
make it work on NT 3.51.

| HEWLETT-PACKARD SCANNERS ON ALPHA WINDOWS NT
Another One In The DECwest Engineering Definitive Cookbook Series
February 1997
1. Windows NT 3.51
HP ScanJet devices can be made to work on Alpha Windows NT 3.51.
However, it is not supported and the process to make it happen is
quite cumbersome. If it absolutely must be done, for help on how
to do it, send mail to [email protected].
(you WILL get charged for services rendered 8^).
2. Windows NT 4.0
HP ScanJet scanners are supported on Alpha Windows NT 4.0 as
prescribed in the Microsoft HCL:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/hwtest/hsearchn4.idc
----------------
The HP ScanJet device can be connected to the Alpha system box via
the system's standard SCSI port. You should not use the adapter
from HP that comes with the ScanJet since there are no Alpha
Windows NT drivers for that adapter.
----------------
Currently, DeskScan II V2.3 and ScanJet software do not work on any
Alpha Windows NT version. Besides being 32-bit Intel applications,
they also require ASPI32 (FX!32 makes no differences here). ASPI32
is not yet available on Alpha Windows NT, at this writing.
The older DeskScan II V2.2 is a 16-bit Intel application and does
not require ASPI32, thus works on Alpha Windows NT 4.0. It can be
obtained from:
http://hpcc997.external.hp.com/cposupport/indexes1/sjetscan.html
It is currently called sj121en.exe (English version). If the above
URL changes, you'll have to browse the HP Home Page for an updated
one.
----------------
Perform the following steps to get DeskScan II V2.2 to work and to
allow the HP ScanJet to function properly on an Alpha Windows NT
4.0 system:
a. Obtain a copy of the DeskScan II V2.2 software distribution
kit (see above).
b. Install the software on the Alpha Windows NT 4.0 system using
the procedure prescribed in the Hewlett-Packard documentation,
EXCEPT: when you are asked whether to allow Setup to modify
the system files (eg. CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, etc.),
answer "NO".
Modification of these files does not have any effect on an
Alpha Windows NT system.
c. After DeskScan Setup completes successfully, add the text line
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\hpscan16.sys
to the file
%SystemRoot%\system32\config.nt
To find out the current definition of %SystemRoot%, enter the
command SET in a DOS command window. One of the environment
parameters should appear similar to the one below
SystemRoot=C:\WINNT40
In this example, the actual file name is
C:\WINNT40\system32\config.nt
d. Reboot the system
----------------
Happy scanning!
