    Brief Description of Problem:
    -----------------------------
Problem Statement

We have a series of sytems which communicate with each other through sockets
and we need to be able to clean up how these work by analysing the flow of the
information which circulates through the Sockets.

We would like to know if there is a way by some remote process or else through
some Operating System Command that will allow us to see and consult the
messages in the afore-mentioned sockets so that the working of and accessing of
the system doesn't solely depend on our individual sytems ?{We do not wnat to
delete the messages in the original system ... just access them}

Grainne,

From my previous dealings with Augustin @ Eliop (Point 4947) I
understand his English is not too good, and since my Spanish is limited to a few
words, could you please pass this asnwer on for me.

We do not supply any software tools specifically to monitor socket traffic.

However, the Unix command 'tcpdump' will monitor tcp/ip packets, and has a
number of options to filter the monitoring as required. See the man page for
full details.

Also, there is a third-party application called TCPwrapper. This consists of a
number of small wrappers which are run by the inetd to monitor various incoming
network connections. This is probably feeware or shareware, and it may be
possible for you to modify it if it does not do exactly what you require, but
of course it is not supported by Digital. For details, subscribe to the mailing
list by sending email to "[email protected]" with in the body (not
subject): subscribe tcp-wrappers-announce.

Could you please let me know when you have passed this on, and then close the
call and I will confirm with Simon to close it in Reading as well.

regards,

Software Partner Eng.
