Subject: I: ESRI: Status Update on ARC/INFO/ALpha/UNIX customer issue.

Mike,

The following is the status update on Clark County, Nevada's ARC/INFO issue
on Digital UNIX that was escalated to SPE by Thornton Ash of Digital on 1/22.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

In order to get the details around the issue, Thornton set up a quick con-call
with Linda Taipale and Roy Mogren (technical contact) of Clark County, Nevada.

Roy explained the problem as follows:

They have 2 nos. of AlphaServer 2100 with RAID storage box and 10BaseT
ethernet adapter running ESRI's ARC/INFO on Digital UNIX V3.2D-1.

They configured the additional 100BaseT ethernet adapter and ARC/INFO
would not come up because the license check failure. They swapped the
physical positions of 10BaseT and 100BaseT cards and license worked fine.

Next, they upgraded the system firmware as an preparation for OS upgrade to
UNIX V4.0. and ARC/INFO application would not come up.

PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS:

ESRI uses a FleXLM for license management which is a third party package from
GlobeTrotter. The way license manager is implemented by design is that it
uses the hardware address of the ethernet adapter as an unique system id
for license validation. Moreover, it checks the license against the first
found ethernet interface on multi-interface machines.

Digital UNIX does not provide any means to configure the OS which specifies
the order of which ethernet interface would be found first. This simply
depends on the physical slot of system controller in which the ethernet
adapter is inserted.

NEXT ACTION FOR RESOLUTION:

Although this is a valid customer issue, the resolution warrents the fix/
changes in the application's license management mechanism/policy. This in
turn may require ESRI to work with FlexLM software provider to implement
the appropriate changes in the license management code/logic to accomodate
the systems with more than one ethernet adapters present. One way to achieve
this for license manager is to match and validate the license against the
hardware addresses of the all the ethernet adapters present in the system.

I have a call into ESRI engineering to bring this specific customer issue
to their attention and offer all the help/support they may need from Digital
in order to seek the satisfactory resolution to this issue. If needed,
Digital SPE would provide the source code which returns the hardware
addresses of all the ethernet interfaces present in the system (for FlexLM
implementation).

Also, the upgrading of firmware should have no effect on the way the
application licensing works.

    Navin,

I spoke with our Tech Support regarding Clark County's problem with the
License Manager. The error is "Product Not Licensed" which happens
intermittently. It seems to be related to the 100baseT controller card
and the network connection. Apparently, Clark County is running 3.2g
and according to DEC, this card is not supported at this OS. It is
however, supported at 4.0. The user will most likely upgrade to 4.0 to
    rule out this possibility.

The next step would be for the user to use the newer version of the
FlexLM License Manager, which is now available with ArcView 3.0. This
is the same version that ARC/INFO 7.1.1 will use.

At this point, Tech Support has it under control and we need to wait to
see what the user is going to do.

ESRI has confirmed that the newer version of FLexLM license manager from
Globetrotter fixes the issue of license validation on the dual ethernet

physical addresses of all the ethernet adapters present in the system for

    Mike,

The server in question runs ARC/INFO. However, almost all of the
ARC/INFO sites also use ArcView on client desktops because of the low
cost and tight integration with ARC/INFO server.

Also, ESRI applications support license management over the network for
UNIX installations. So, any node (including the one running ArcView) could
be configured as a license server.

    Michelle,

Thanks for your help on Clark County, Nevada's FLexLM issue..

Since your last mail, the following actions have been taken.

    - They upgraded to Digital UNIX V4.0A to ensure the OS support for
    100baseT
      ( DE500) ethernet adapter.

    - They also upgraded to the newer version of FlexLM as per your
    suggestion
      to support dual ethernet configuration.

They are still having the same problems with ARC/INFO FLexLM. The
    technical
contact at Clark County is Roy Mogren (702-455-6424) who is working
    with Keith
Canon(??) (ESRI support call log# 180.4269) and Michael Amouzandeh of
    ESRI.

They are also having Digital field service person onsite today to check
    and
    ensure the hardware sanity.

What is desired at this point is that they get support from FLexLM
    expert to
pinpoint the exact problem/failure point. May be this requires
    GlobeTrotter,
    Inc. involvement.

Jerry Newton had discussed this issue with Diana Hiland and she had
    indicated
that Clark County are important customer and ESRI would to do the
    needful for
    the satisfactory resolution.

Could you please provide this update to the appropriate persons within
    ESRI
in order to ensure the continued support required to bring this issue
    to
    the satisfactory closure.

    Thanks and regards,

    Jerry,
Forwarding FYI. The lot has been done, but the issue is still
    not
resolved. The involvment of ARC/INFO/FlexLM (third party license

    Navin,

Next week, I'll meet with our Tech Support people (Michael, Keith) and
the license manager team to discuss this problem. We are trying to
finish up 7.1.1 so next week is the soonest I can look into it.

    Kirt,

As per our telephonic conversation, I am sending you the description of
    the
problem reported by one of the important customers.

They have couple of AlphaServer2100 with dual ethernet adapters 10baseT
    and 100BaseT (DE500-AA). They use ESRI's ARC/INFO application
    (client/server
based) which uses FlexLM from GlobeTrotter for License Management. The
    FlexLM
uses hardware address of ethernet adapter as an unique id for license
validation. The license key code is assigned against the hardware
    address of
    DE500-AA.

Earlier, the servers were running Digital UNIX V3.2D-1 and at firmware
rev 4.0. They claim that DE500-AA worked fine at that OS/Firmware
    revision.
(although I think it was unsupported OS for DE500-AA).

In the process of upgrading to UNIX V4.0B, as soon as they upgraded to
firmware revision 4.7, they started seeing intermittent network
    connection
drop problems. The application startup would intermittently fail
    bacause of
the license validation failure against 100BaseT card in the system.
Right now, the system is running V4.0B and the problem has continued.

ESRI has spent much time looking into license management module but
    they
has not been able to figure out the exact reason for the failure. The
same license management software works fine on all the other Digital's
    and
competition systems. The customer suspects that it is OS/drivers issue.

We would appreciate any help you can provide to help resolve the issue.
Please let me know if any additional information/specifics is desired.
    The
customer is very anxious for resolution and is open any suggestions
    that
    we may have.

They do not have access to DE500-XA but have call into Digital account
    manager
to get one on loan to try it out in the same environment.

A little note on engineering contacts:

Rajul Shah is the engineer who wrote the driver. He has recommended
that we work with Kirt Gillum who is responsible for maintaining the
driver. They work in the same group.

Right, support for the -AA was not added until V3.2G.

The -AA performs autonegotiation. This can be problematic if you are
plugging into a non-negotiating repeater. However, all things can be
worked around. First, look at the environment variables in the console
(>>> show ewa*), and make sure the mode is set to the desired access
method. Second, if problems still persist, look at the man page on
lan_config, and manually configure the device for the media/speed that
    you
    intend to use.

Access to the hardware address is the same whether or not the device is
    running.
