Subj: Re: Excel50c on Alpha 1000
Excel 5.0c problems
From Top of Mind ticket #6388
Jane is repeatedly getting intermittent errors to the effect of "illegal
operation"...and "memory errors"....at the point of these errors Jane's PC is
locking up to where she has to reboot will not even allow "End Task". Dean,
Cathy, 11/11/96 07:51...She is opening a work book with "ten spreadsheets"
when she locks up. Dean, Cathy, 11/11/96 07:53
Forward To has been changed from D1 to by Dean, Cathy - 11/11/96 07:53
Note Pam Barlow reported that she is getting same errors as Jane....illegal
operation error.
Dean, Cathy, 11/12/96 12:05
D1 Helpdesk ticket opened #418727. Discussion went as follows:
Symptoms: - PC's lockup with error messages
- User must end task "excel" or shutdown PC
- Problem begin around time of printers move
to admin2 or excel move to admin2
- Excel has been reinstalled on admin2
- Users loose drive letters in excel only
Error Messages: - Microsoft Excel " Not enough Memory "
- An Excel Lexicon
[\\admin2\excel50\excel50\xlen50.olb] is
missing or damaged.
- DLL error messages
- This package or program has performed an
illegal operation
Users Reporting Problems:
- Pam Barlow

- Cindy Lagrange
- Mary Embry
- Chuck Martin
- Sherry Boyken
- Bobbie Hess
12/2/96...Bobbie still reporting problems with drives disconnecting through the
day and she will have to cycle to pick up drives to ADMIN2. Dean, Cathy,
12/02/96 09:08
12/3/96...Working in Excel---msg. this program has performed illegal operation
and will be shut down....details reflect that Excel had performed a segment
load failure.
Dean, Cathy, 12/03/96 08:05
01/03/97...Working in Excel----Was in working for a while and came up with the
Lexicon error while in Excel....had to shut down three times each time locked
up while in Excel. Dean, Cathy, 01/02/97 09:26
Illegal function....3 lockups today....Greg Dues.
Dean, Cathy, 01/15/97 14:14
Disks received from Advanced were bad, copied excel50c /winword60c from temp
directory I set 2 years ago to admin2. They were for testing only were hardly
ever used. Will see what happens... Ben Brumley, Ben, 01/18/97 11:40
Still waiting on disk from advanced systems Brumley, Ben, 01/28/97 11:13
Action Reaction
Copied files from Plant1 to Admin2 Still have errors
Copied files from \\Admin\Excel50\*.* to Admin2 service Still have
errors
Moved all users having problems to Plant1 Stopped receiving
errors
Moved Win311 users from \\Admin\excel50 to
\\Admin2\excel50 (Lori Lony & Cindy). Started receiving errors
Deleted service off of admin (\\admin\excel50).
Recreated that service back on admin (\\admin\excel50).
Copied excel files from Admin2 to admin. These are the
files that are suppose to be bad. Connected Lori & Cindy
back to \\admin\excel50. No Errors
Moved Cindy LaGrange & Mary Embry to \\admin\excel50 No Errors
Reinstalled Excel 5.0c to Admin2 02/02/97 Still have errors
Users that are using the service on Admin are still not having any problems,
the user that are using the service on Admin2 are still having the same
problems. It would be my advise not to move Plant1 to Unix until this problem
has a resolution.
Some of this might be confusing. This from our help desk ticket on-site.
Here is some definitions for the above text
admin server VAX 3100-80 running VMS/Pathworks No excel problems on this
server
admin2 server Alpha 1000 4/266 running Digital Unix /Pathworks Massive Excel
problems
Plant1 server Alpha 1000 4/266 running VMS/Pathworks No excel problems on
this server
Digital Unix seems to be the constant in this whole problem.
Please give me a call if this message is confusing or you need some more input.
