3083.0. "OLI Systems" by HYDRA::AXPDEVELOPER (Alpha Developer support) Fri Jan 24 1997 16:02

    Company Name :  OLI Systems

    Brief Description of Problem:
    -----------------------------
Bob is having trouble getting his VMS system up and running on a TCP/IP
network. He's configuring his network adapter using ucxconfig and is getting
an error:

	Error defining interface:0
	Device not in configuration or not available.

When he does a show device, the output informs him that the device is off
line.

It looks like he's running v6.3 VMS and ucx v4.01

Donna and Chuck suggested he check the licensing, that ucx started up
in the proper way, and to see if he can use decnet.

None of these things work. I asked Bob to package all the version info
and error output into an email message and send it to me.

I also consulted Bruce Campbell on this and he didn't have an idea as to what
the solution would be.

3083.2Need proper version/config info...AMCUCS::SWIERKOWSKIQuot homines tot sententiaeFri Jan 24 1997 19:4324
Greetings!

>>>It looks like he's running v6.3 VMS and ucx v4.01

  Re: .1, I assume this is a typo, there is no OpenVMS (VAX or Alpha) V6.3
and UCX is currently at V4.0 (possibly with 1 or more ECO's installed), however
UCX doesn't do version information in the format of "Vm.nn" (it should be
"Vm.n-nn" if one or more ECO levels have been installed).

  Have the customer supply the output from "$ MCR UCX$VERSIONS" for details
on the UCX image(s) being used.

  Don't forget that you have to configure (and start) DECnet *before* you
attempt to invoke UCX$STARTUP.COM in SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM and that you *must*
invoke UCX$CONFIG.COM to configure the "Core", "Client" and "Server" components
before you start UCX at boot time, cheers...

Bob Young called again. I passed along the info in .3, he'll do it and call back.

3083.4Called again!HYDRA::AXPDEVELOPERAlpha Developer supportTue Feb 04 1997 10:4019
    He just called again. I am on the phone with him right now. He has:

    >>> ewa0_mode twisted_pair

    When he tries to start DECnet he gets:

    $ @netconfig
    DECnet starting
    Operation failure, device is not in configuration
    or not available
    Unrecognizable component circuit
    circuit = ewa0

    $ sho dev/full ewa0:
    Device DE435 is offline, network device, a template only.

    I'll try posting in VMSNOTES and alphastations notesfile.

                      -< have been on the phone 3 times. >-

    Have suggested several things to him. Still not working. Looks like he
    needs to upgrade to V6.2-1H3. Mark suggests he call the 9000 number and
    order through them. I have asked in the vmsnotes about the procedure as
    well.

3083.6reply from vmsnotesHYDRA::AXPDEVELOPERAlpha Developer supportTue Feb 04 1997 13:3820
    Got the following reply from vmsnotes as well.

    : How does he update to V6.2-1H3?

       External folks order the CD-ROM from the Software Supply Business
       (SSB) folks. Contact 1-800-DIGITAL, or the local reseller. You
       must explicitly order the specific release required, otherwise you
       might get a release such as V7.1.

       Digital-internal order information is posted in 8.15.

       As for the upgrade sequence, V6.2 can be updated/upgraded directly
    to
       V6.2-1H3 with no intermediate stops. Various other upgrade/update
       paths are posted in note 8.13.

       As should always be mentioned (and seldom done :-), read the OpenVMS
       installation and upgrade manual for the release, as well as the new
       features and release notes.
