Subj: RE: NT 4.0 server available?
Regarding your recent request for information about running Windows NT
Version 4.0 on Digital's AlphaServer 4100.
There is a bug in Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 1 and
Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2 on multiprocessor Alpha systems, e.g.
AlphaServers 2000, 2100, 2100A, 4000 and 4100. This bug causes memory
pool corruption that causes the system to crash, typically with a "System
Service Exception" bug check.
This problem will be resolved in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3. As an
interim solution, customers may upgrade their Windows NT 4.0
multiprocessor AlphaServers to Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2, and apply
the "hot fix" (QFE) available from Microsoft via anonymous FTP from
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com
/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt40/hotfixes-postSP2/Alpha-fix/
>> Please note that I split the path name to make it fit 80 columns <<

AlphaServer 4100 and the HCL
----------------------------
Please note that the availability of the QFE does NOT mean that the
Alphaserver 4100 is on the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List. It does
mean that the QFE will now allow the 4100 to run the Hardware
Compatibility Tests. It is estimated to take two more weeks before the
4100 is listed on the HCL.

Subject: Re: NT 4.0 server available?
Hi!
Thank you for the update.
We have placed a purchase order for buying an AlphaServer 4100 (4 CPUs each at
clock rate of 466mhz) and disk array served by a HSZ50. I also got a good
news from my Sales Rep. that Windows NT 4.0 will finally be certified by
MicroSoft in early March.
I hope there would be Service Packs 3 available. If not, I will take your
advice and install Service Packs 2 and QuickFix when I get it.
Thank you,

Subject: NFS server/client software for NT 4.0 Server
Hi!
AlphaServer 4100 that we ordered is finally hit our Receiving Dock. We will
start installing Windows NT 4.0 Server next week. Thanks for all the help you
guys provided to me.
I have few more questions:
o Are there NFS server/client for alpha-based Windows NT 4.0? I checked
NetManage OnNet32 and FTP Software InterDriver Server, but both work only with
Intel-based machine.
o I heard lot of good things about FX!32. Does FX!32 (that I believe is
included in our NT distribution media) permit any Intel-based software to run?
What are the restrictions?
o Does FX!32 work with kernel-mode program? I guess not since NetManage and
FTP Software have not heard alpha-based Windows NT 4.0.
Thanks,
Hidetomi Mimura

Subj: RE: NFS server/client software for NT 4.0 Server
I haven't used any of these, but they are reported to be available on DIGITAL
computers running Microsoft Windows NT. There may be others.
Hummingbird Maestro
Intergraph DiskShare & PC-NFS
http://www.service.digital.com/fx32/ has lots of info about the software.
In general, it's a very good translator. Of course, I recommend native Alpha
programming because you get the best possible performance. The following comes
from the FAQ at the site:
What software cannot be run under FX!32?
FX!32 is designed to run end-user Win32 x86 applications. It does not run
system applications, such as Services, device drivers, debuggers, or screen
savers. FX!32 supports interpreters, such as Microsoft Visual Basic, but does
not support x86 language compiler IDEs (interactive development environments).
IDEs are typically hard-coded for a particular architecture (x86 in this case)
and require unsupported system access for features like embedded debuggers. Run
native compiler IDEs instead.
