    ----------

    Dear Ed,

On the 14th of January, Navin Modi of Software Parners Engineering
here in MRO contacted you about an issue that FORE Systems was having
with a device driver for their ATM adapter on Windows NT 4.0 on Alpha.

Navin is going to be out of the office for an extended period and we
are trying to follow up on some of the issues assigned to him still
    marked as "open".

Could you let us know whether this issue as already been resolved or
whether it is still open? Also, if FORE Systems is getting support on
this direct from DECWest on this issue, let us know that too and we'll
mark the issue as closed from our end of things.

    Thanks in advance!

    regards,
    Jeff Donsbach

    ----------

    Dear Jeff,

The current issue with FORE Systems has not yet been resolved. We at
the IHV at DECWest are currently working with FORE directly to come to
    a
    close on the problem.

Several changes in the design of the FORE code have been made to for
more compiant MS code. However, no afftect to the problem was
    witnessed.

In addition, until recently (approx. 02/24/97), reluctance on the part
of FORE to supply DECWest with the code to help us to debug has slowed
progress down. A non-disclosure form was eventually brought into the
picture. We are now at a position to FULLY understand the problem.

Also, my responsibilities in the IVH have changed somewhat. Although I
am not directly working on the problem, I am working closely and
assisting Phuc Dinh, the engineer that is currently working on it.

    Ed

2936.8Final Update from DECwest IHVDECWET::VOBAWed Apr 23 1997 17:0716
We finally received the driver source code from FORE.

Phuc [email protected] and the IHV team were able to track the problem
to the interaction between the FORE driver and the FORE adapter in
their interrupt handling and raising mechanisms, respectively. We
suggested changes to the FORE driver ISR code to be more robust in
dealing with its adapter's interrupt register bit mask.

As a result, the adapter and driver are no longer exhibiting the
dropped link misbehavior (due to "lost interrupts") on the AlphaServer
platforms running NT 3.51 or 4.0. The new driver has been running at
the FORE customer site since last week with no reported problems.

    We consider this case closed.
