| My 2 cents...as far as biking goes - I only have a road bike so I need pavement!
(or *very* hard packed dirt)
Have ridden through Mine's Falls Park. Love it in there! Wasn't crowded at all
when I was there though my friend and I did manage to crash into each other!
;-) (can't even remember what happened now, but I have clipless pedals and
couldn't click out of them in time so I went down ;-( )
Deane, you managed 16 mph on the Bedford trail????? Yikes, either it must've
been dead or you must've doing a heck of a lot of weaving!! ;-) I tend to opt
away from the trails.
Hey, Shawn, you biker you! Haven't heard anything from you in this note. What

Easy. See my earlier note. "Or maybe [s]he who brings it up,

Ok, we have mz_deb's theatre this weekend. Anyone have plans for the
weekend after? (May 3/4) Warm weather just got here so I'm sure
there'll be plenty of time for more trips. I don't know when black
fly season is, but I hope we can miss them. The weekend after that is
Barb's theatre weekend. (May 10/11)
I'll also collect the suggested bike trails as they're posted.

| Bill,
I had the same thoughts this morning. I have Angeline this weekend
though. I couldn't hike, but could walk far with carriage. I could
bike, but again, not a major. Would be my first ride and Angeline would
be on the back.
I am going to get out on the bike with her. I guess we'll see if
you get many takers. If you don't wind up with a nice full blown
event for this weekend, we could always cruise a bit.
The next weekend, May 3 and 4th - Sunday the 4th looks real good for
me. Angeline will be with her Dad then. I think Sunday's are better
for Bob Brower too.

How does Angeline like riding in a carriage? Ever tried carrying her
for any distance? I'd bet it's a good workout! ;-)
>> I could bike, but again, not a major. Would be my first ride and

It'll be my first, too, in a while. I could ride motorcycles for a few
hundred miles, but they're also a lot more comfortable than a bicycle.
Best to start out slow and work up to longer rides in the summer.
Yeah, let's see what kind of turnout we get today and tomorrow.
Later,

Sorry Bill, but it caught my funny bone. I used to backpack
Angeline a lot when she was smaller. She and I both loved it.
But I could not carry that 3ft+ 34lb little bundle of joy far
now. She does do well in the carriage with entertainment. Like,
we both loved backpacking, and now walking around places like, Boston.
We get in the public gardens or around Fanueil and I let her out a
bit.

A cycle up the trails of Caddilac Mtn would be doable even for someone
not in good cycling shape..

If bike, then we should probably stick to pavement. If walk, then
Carlisle sounds like a good spot. I don't care either way, though I'd
get a better workout biking, and I need the exercise. Or do you want
to do both? Maybe go to Carlisle to walk a little and see the animals,
then go somewhere else for some biking? Obviously, there are some who
just want the walking part...
We also need to discuss the time element. Some people just aren't

Hi,
There is a paved road that runs through the park. If you park in the
parking area, you can bike up the road, and then take Rangeway rd into
Billerica.. it is a nice ride... or you can go in the other direction
and bike into Carlisle center, also a nice ride...
So, we could meet there around 1:00pm, the bikers could bike.. the
walkers could take a trail and we could all meet for icecream...

For some reason I thought you were a New Hampster. I can take

And you know what else just crossed my mind??? I have no helmet.
Are you guys going to give me flak? Angeline has one, I just

63.58 | Directions from route 4 in Chelmsford | DANGER::ASKETH | Beware of Greeks bearing gifts... | Fri Apr 25 1997 15:28 | 36 |
| OK, here are directions through Chelmsford center on route 4. Either follow
these directly to Great Brook or meeting Kathleen at the rink and follow her
over her way (directions to the rink are in a previous reply).
DIRECTIONS FROM ROUTE 4 IN CHELMSFORD.
OK you can get to route 4 from 495 or from the Drum Hill rotary/route 3.
From the rotary, head south on route 4.
From 495, going NORTH, take the route 4 exit. Take a right at the end of the
ramp onto 4 south.
From 495, going SOUTH, you need to take the route 110 exit (there is no route
4 exit in the southbound direction). Take a right at the end of the ramp onto
110 south/west. At the light take a right onto Fletcher St. At the end of
Fletcher take a left onto route 4 south.
You'll pass the Chelmsford fire station on the left and then come into Chelms-
ford Center. You basically want to head straight through, staying on 4 south.
You are going to have to jog a little bit to the left to go straight on 4 south.
Stay in the right lane. You'll pass the library on the left (the back of it).
The road will fork and 4 south will go to the right.
Ok, now you're through Chelmsford center. Stay on 4 S. You're going to take
a right onto Concord Rd. Concord Rd forks off to the right. There is a service
station in the triangle the fork makes.
Stay on Concord Rd into Carlisle. It then becomes Lowell St.
A ways down you'll see Great Brook State Park on the left. There'll be a big
barn and a sign for the ice cream stand. You want to take a left onto North Rd
(NOT Old North Road which comes before it). The parking lot will be a little

You drive through Chelmsford center yuckiest intersection I've ever
seen!! By a small shopping plaza on your left.. The road will fork to
the right.. I'm not certain of the name of the road but there's a
garage Pyramid or Diamond auto service at the fork.. Go right at this
fork the park is about 2-3 miles in on the left.. There's also a Ciro's
about midway to the park on this road.. They have great Pizza...

Kathleen, Sue, Ron, Bob, and 4 fine representatives of the younger

Sorry you got the sunburn, Joyce. I think everyone got a good
dose of U.V. today. I should've offered sunblock. I had gotten
there an hour early and had put it on then. Forgot about it later...
We had five cyclists, six if you count Angeline. cj did an
amazing job pedaling their combined weight around. My legs gave
out shortly after we started. ;-) My legs were cramping up from
the 45-minutes of biking I had done earlier. Yeah, that's ticket!
;-) Barb lived up to her billing, though. She biked at least 20
minutes to get there, biked with us, then biked home again. Then
she had rehearsals tonight. Don't know how she does it.
Oh yeah, I had a spill that no one saw. A sharp poker of a tree
limb jumped out and attacked me. ;-) No injury other than minor
abrasions where the limb scraped my forearm. The bike went out from
under me but I somehow landed on my feet, running. Too bad there
was no video. ;-) Oh, and the bike only suffered a divot in the
new seat.
Today was wonderful! Time to start planning the next trip, again
either hike or bike depending on what people want to do.
Cheers,

there is the current plan barring horrendous weather forecasts. If
the weather *is* bad for the afternoon, then you and Barb (and probably

63.134 | Biking on the NH Seacoast Anyone? | FOUNDR::SHEEHAN | | Thu May 08 1997 12:12 | 34 |
|
Hi all,
I've been reading through these notes and it seems like you
folks all have a good time biking together and also some bike
with your kids. I have 2 daughters age 11 & 12 who like to
bike.
Soooo I'd like to propose a bike trip along the NH Seacoast
from my home at Hampton Beach to Portsmouth along what could
be considered the most Scenic Drive in NH. Coastal Rt. 1 A.
The trip is approx 30 miles round trip but there are lots of
stops along the way and it doesn't seem that long. The road
is well paved mostly flat and has a generous bike lane most
of the way. Mountain bikers will love Odiorne's trails and
riding on the packed beach sand "optional"
Some nice stops are....
North Hampton State Beach
Jenness Beach Rye
Wallis Sands State Beach Rye
Odiorne State Park Portsmouth
Presscot Park Portsmouth
Strawberry Banke Portsmouth.
If anyone is interested please send me mail FOUNDR::SHEEHAN and
what your preference is Sat. or Sun. I'll post the attendees here.
I'm pretty flexible on the day and time but 11am would probably
be a good starting time to enjoy the afternoon.

Re.151
Glad you liked Odiorne Bill and thanks for the nice update
on the ride.
It was a georgeous day to be outdoors whether it be biking
or not. Odoirne was full of activity yesterday with walkers,
roller bladers, bikers and picnicerd. There were lots of folks
from the Seacoast Cleanup effort having an outdoor BBQ
with live music as well. My daughters especially enjoyed spending
some time looking in the tide pools for starfish and in the Science
and Nature Center at Odiorne and seeing and touching the Crustaceans
and molusks in the big Saltwater Tank. We also got a real close up
view of a snail eating the algae off the aquarium glass. One of the
Centers Staff had a magnifying video camera connected to a monitor
and we could actually see the snail eating.
After the ride a stop at Lago's Lone Oaks Ice Cream replaced the
few calories we burn't off during the ride. Lago's is by far the
greatest Ice Cream on the Seacoast.
Hope we have as nice a day on the June 7th Ride as well as more
riders. The June 7th ride I gaurantee will be worth every pedal...
Cheers!

It's been a few years since I "ran" up and down. I think it was on the

| Ok, just for the record, lbassett and I went up Monadnock today.
Short story, I was left in the dust.
We went up White Dot just like the 300 or so people on the mountain at
the same time. Coming down, we ventured into newer territory. Smith
Summit Trail --> Fairy Spring Trail --> Thoreau Trail (which goes back
uphill!!) --> Lost Farm Trail. And the reason we went back uphill at
all costs was because lbassett didn't want to do either trail that had
"Cliff" in the name. Apparently done before and highly disliked. The
descent took about 2 1/2 hours.
My cardiovascular system gave out 20 minutes into White Dot. I
couldn't walk at double pace and trying to do so only killed me that
much sooner. From then on, I plodded, rested, plodded, etc. I was
about 15-20 minutes behind lbassett overall. Coming down, I retained a
bit of what little dignity was left.
Good workout. Lost 2-3 lbs. Gained it all back at dinner at the
Border. ;-)
Cheers,

Depending on the day and riders ablilities we may shorten the
