63.0. "The hiking/biking activity note" by DANGER::ASKETH (Beware of Greeks bearing gifts...) Wed Apr 23 1997 17:20

Ok, folks, just cause I'm starting this note doesn't mean I'm organizing things.
;-) Just thought it would be good to have a separate note!

Ok, found out where Harold Parker Forest is. North Andover.

My 2 cents...as far as biking goes - I only have a road bike so I need pavement!
(or *very* hard packed dirt)

Have ridden through Mine's Falls Park. Love it in there! Wasn't crowded at all
when I was there though my friend and I did manage to crash into each other!
;-) (can't even remember what happened now, but I have clipless pedals and
couldn't click out of them in time so I went down ;-( )

Deane, you managed 16 mph on the Bedford trail????? Yikes, either it must've
been dead or you must've doing a heck of a lot of weaving!! ;-) I tend to opt
away from the trails.

Hey, Shawn, you biker you! Haven't heard anything from you in this note. What
you too good for us in here?? ;-P

Hi Barb,

Your such a good organizer though, and you already have
a lot of info...

Were there any pictures from your birthday party???

Did the bubble wrap cushion the fall? ;-) Since you survived the
    fall, I trust/hope it wasn't that bad.

    >> And just how do you get me volunteering out of...

Easy. See my earlier note. "Or maybe [s]he who brings it up,
volunteers?..." You organized this topic, so why not the outing too?

    ;-)

Ok, we have mz_deb's theatre this weekend. Anyone have plans for the
weekend after? (May 3/4) Warm weather just got here so I'm sure
there'll be plenty of time for more trips. I don't know when black
fly season is, but I hope we can miss them. The weekend after that is
    Barb's theatre weekend. (May 10/11)

I'll also collect the suggested bike trails as they're posted.

    Bill,

I had the same thoughts this morning. I have Angeline this weekend
though. I couldn't hike, but could walk far with carriage. I could
bike, but again, not a major. Would be my first ride and Angeline would
    be on the back.

I am going to get out on the bike with her. I guess we'll see if
you get many takers. If you don't wind up with a nice full blown
event for this weekend, we could always cruise a bit.

The next weekend, May 3 and 4th - Sunday the 4th looks real good for
me. Angeline will be with her Dad then. I think Sunday's are better
    for Bob Brower too.

Exactly! ;-) Gotta maximize the chances for my buddy, Bob, to be able
    to make it.

    >> I couldn't hike, but could walk far with carriage.

How does Angeline like riding in a carriage? Ever tried carrying her
for any distance? I'd bet it's a good workout! ;-)

    >> I could bike, but again, not a major. Would be my first ride and
    >> Angeline would be on the back.

It'll be my first, too, in a while. I could ride motorcycles for a few
hundred miles, but they're also a lot more comfortable than a bicycle.
Best to start out slow and work up to longer rides in the summer.

Yeah, let's see what kind of turnout we get today and tomorrow.

    Later,

Ha Ha Ha! Those of you who've met and seen me with Angeline...
do you think I can carry her far??

Sorry Bill, but it caught my funny bone. I used to backpack
Angeline a lot when she was smaller. She and I both loved it.
But I could not carry that 3ft+ 34lb little bundle of joy far
now. She does do well in the carriage with entertainment. Like,
we both loved backpacking, and now walking around places like, Boston.
We get in the public gardens or around Fanueil and I let her out a
    bit.

cj thanks for your consideration :-) hopefully real soon I'll
also have my saturdays free.. My kids all love riding so any Sunday
would be fine.. Hmmm I see the possibility of a camping/biking trip
this summer... There're some awesome trails in Bar Harbor, Maine..
A cycle up the trails of Caddilac Mtn would be doable even for someone
    not in good cycling shape..
With my van I can carry 4 bikes on my carrier and another 4-5 in
the back with the seat out.

Nope, I'm not.. Sorry.. Got a date Friday night, helping
friends move saturday morning, an afternoon party to start
the summer with (The Annual Tropics Party), and then I'm
hopping in my car with the top down and heading up North
to the ski club to party with the folks who skied Tuckermans
Saturday. Sunday I'll come home and play the last floor hockey

	I'm totally booked!

Oh yes, I can see us on dirt trails now! Even sharp corners
kill us. I have to take wide turns like and 18 wheeler!

So we're looking at a possible small trip this Sunday? Or
are we focusing on maybe the 4th?

(BTW, Harold Parker forest is paved trails as well as off road.

Since I don't have any strong feelings toward where we bike, let's say
we go to the Harold Parker Forest as cj suggests. Starting time and
    duration is negotiable.

We have the following interested parties:

    Barb
    Bob with kids (right?)
    cj and Angeline
    Bill

Late participants are welcome, though make sure you contact me by 6pm
Saturday via email so that we'll know to wait if anyone's missing at
the rendezvous point. This applies to cancellations, too, though you
can probably call me right up to Sunday morning. I'll send out my
    phone number later.

There is also a place in Carlisle called the Meadow Brook St. Park. It
is a working dairy farm. There are walking/hiking/biking trails.
There is a petting area with chickens, goats, cows, ducks. There is
also an ice-cream stand with a glass wall so you can see through into
    the cow barn.

Its a neat place for a picnic/walking/bring along the kids type
    place...

No paved trails... but some really nice walking trails... and if
anyone is into canoeing.. there is a nice size pond about 1/4 mile or
    so passed the parking area..

Its also a dog friendly place..

    What time on Sunday?

63.43TARKIN::LINBill LinFri Apr 25 1997 13:5514
This is getting complicated. What do people want to do, walk or bike?
If bike, then we should probably stick to pavement. If walk, then
Carlisle sounds like a good spot. I don't care either way, though I'd
get a better workout biking, and I need the exercise. Or do you want
to do both? Maybe go to Carlisle to walk a little and see the animals,
then go somewhere else for some biking? Obviously, there are some who
    just want the walking part...

We also need to discuss the time element. Some people just aren't
morning people. ;-) I'll be up reasonably early regardless.

Do what you like to do.

Carlisle is excellent for road bikes as well as mtn. If I'm
correct they have around 30-50km of trails anything from rugged trails
to nice wide flat trails made of stone dust. I've raced there several
times and it's a great place. The goats and cows along with a viewing
area inside overlooking the milking parlor are great for kids.
Naturally their ice creams is splendid!!

    Hi,

There is a paved road that runs through the park. If you park in the
parking area, you can bike up the road, and then take Rangeway rd into
Billerica.. it is a nice ride... or you can go in the other direction
and bike into Carlisle center, also a nice ride...

So, we could meet there around 1:00pm, the bikers could bike.. the
walkers could take a trail and we could all meet for icecream...

fine if there isn't too much auto traffic. If I have too much energy,

I'm going to be walking in Boston most of the day tomorrow (catching

As I mentioned, the people interested will have suggestions
and eventually any event will wind up quite well organized.

Stay tuned...I'm gonna get directions from C'ford center for Joyce so I'll post
them here. So you can either follow those or meet Kathleen at the rink and
follow her over.

Either meet Kathleen at the rink at 12:30 or meet at the GB State Park parking
lot at 1:00.

cj, you're very kind for giving me the encouragement and for trying to
be a biking companion. I'll be just fine. ;-)

I don't know what to expect regarding the biking conditions and the
proximity to the animals, but I suspect we can go find the animals even
if we have our bikes with us. I'll bring my bike regardless.

How do you carry your bike? I have a bike rack but it doesn't lock so
I'd probably toss the bike into the back of the Jeep if I leave the
bike/car unattended for any length of time. I can probably fit another
bike or two inside as well if anyone would like to take me up on the
    offer.

I can't locate Great Brook State Park on my Delorme Street Atlas map,
but I do see a Carlisle State Forest. Kathleen mentioned Rangeway
Road. I see Rangeway (going south-southwest) crossing rt. 4 then
becoming Rutland Street before getting to Carlisle center (marked on my
map near rt. 225). The Carlisle State Forest is shown halfway between
rt. 4 and rt. 225. Is that it?

    Bill,

I had asked where you live because I do not have a bike rack.
For some reason I thought you were a New Hampster. I can take
my front wheel off and transport in my car. But that's why my
front brake is so loose now. No sense in tightening it before
I go. I'll take the wheel off, and then tighten the brake once
    I get there.

And you know what else just crossed my mind??? I have no helmet.
Are you guys going to give me flak? Angeline has one, I just
never got around to one for myself last year and there's no way
I can pick one up before the Sunday.

If you're all helmet heads, perhaps Barb? you can lend me one

63.58Directions from route 4 in ChelmsfordDANGER::ASKETHBeware of Greeks bearing gifts...Fri Apr 25 1997 15:2836
OK, here are directions through Chelmsford center on route 4. Either follow
these directly to Great Brook or meeting Kathleen at the rink and follow her
over her way (directions to the rink are in a previous reply).

DIRECTIONS FROM ROUTE 4 IN CHELMSFORD.

OK you can get to route 4 from 495 or from the Drum Hill rotary/route 3.

From the rotary, head south on route 4.

From 495, going NORTH, take the route 4 exit. Take a right at the end of the
ramp onto 4 south.

From 495, going SOUTH, you need to take the route 110 exit (there is no route
4 exit in the southbound direction). Take a right at the end of the ramp onto
110 south/west. At the light take a right onto Fletcher St. At the end of
Fletcher take a left onto route 4 south.

You'll pass the Chelmsford fire station on the left and then come into Chelms-
ford Center. You basically want to head straight through, staying on 4 south.
You are going to have to jog a little bit to the left to go straight on 4 south.

Stay in the right lane. You'll pass the library on the left (the back of it).
The road will fork and 4 south will go to the right.

Ok, now you're through Chelmsford center. Stay on 4 S. You're going to take
a right onto Concord Rd. Concord Rd forks off to the right. There is a service
station in the triangle the fork makes.

Stay on Concord Rd into Carlisle. It then becomes Lowell St.

A ways down you'll see Great Brook State Park on the left. There'll be a big
barn and a sign for the ice cream stand. You want to take a left onto North Rd
(NOT Old North Road which comes before it). The parking lot will be a little
ways down North Rd on the left.

You drive through Chelmsford center yuckiest intersection I've ever
seen!! By a small shopping plaza on your left.. The road will fork to
the right.. I'm not certain of the name of the road but there's a
garage Pyramid or Diamond auto service at the fork.. Go right at this
fork the park is about 2-3 miles in on the left.. There's also a Ciro's

It was great spending a beautiful afternoon with Joyce, Barb, cj,
Kathleen, Sue, Ron, Bob, and 4 fine representatives of the younger
set. Thanks for the extra effort to be there, Bob. You too, Sue.

Sorry you got the sunburn, Joyce. I think everyone got a good
dose of U.V. today. I should've offered sunblock. I had gotten
there an hour early and had put it on then. Forgot about it later...

We had five cyclists, six if you count Angeline. cj did an
amazing job pedaling their combined weight around. My legs gave
out shortly after we started. ;-) My legs were cramping up from
the 45-minutes of biking I had done earlier. Yeah, that's ticket!
;-) Barb lived up to her billing, though. She biked at least 20
minutes to get there, biked with us, then biked home again. Then
she had rehearsals tonight. Don't know how she does it.

Oh yeah, I had a spill that no one saw. A sharp poker of a tree
limb jumped out and attacked me. ;-) No injury other than minor
abrasions where the limb scraped my forearm. The bike went out from
under me but I somehow landed on my feet, running. Too bad there
was no video. ;-) Oh, and the bike only suffered a divot in the
    new seat.

Today was wonderful! Time to start planning the next trip, again
either hike or bike depending on what people want to do.

Yesterday was awesome!!! Thanks for pulling it together Bill and thanks to
Kathleen (not me) for the idea of Great Brook Farm. Neat place! Have been by
it many times, on my bike and in my car, but never stopped. Great ice cream

this season.

Am definitely up for doing this again!! Hmmm, maybe I can borrow my sister's

63.134Biking on the NH Seacoast Anyone?FOUNDR::SHEEHANThu May 08 1997 12:1234
 Hi all,

I've been reading through these notes and it seems like you
folks all have a good time biking together and also some bike
with your kids. I have 2 daughters age 11 & 12 who like to
 bike.

Soooo I'd like to propose a bike trip along the NH Seacoast
from my home at Hampton Beach to Portsmouth along what could
be considered the most Scenic Drive in NH. Coastal Rt. 1 A.
The trip is approx 30 miles round trip but there are lots of
stops along the way and it doesn't seem that long. The road
is well paved mostly flat and has a generous bike lane most
of the way. Mountain bikers will love Odiorne's trails and
riding on the packed beach sand "optional"

 Some nice stops are....

 North Hampton State Beach
 Jenness Beach Rye
 Wallis Sands State Beach Rye
 Odiorne State Park Portsmouth
 Presscot Park Portsmouth
 Strawberry Banke Portsmouth.

If anyone is interested please send me mail FOUNDR::SHEEHAN and
what your preference is Sat. or Sun. I'll post the attendees here.
I'm pretty flexible on the day and time but 11am would probably
be a good starting time to enjoy the afternoon.

 Regards,

63.154Biking Trip Sunday 5/18 Update 2FOUNDR::SHEEHANMon May 19 1997 10:1228
 Re.151

Glad you liked Odiorne Bill and thanks for the nice update
 on the ride.

It was a georgeous day to be outdoors whether it be biking
or not. Odoirne was full of activity yesterday with walkers,
roller bladers, bikers and picnicerd. There were lots of folks
from the Seacoast Cleanup effort having an outdoor BBQ
with live music as well. My daughters especially enjoyed spending
some time looking in the tide pools for starfish and in the Science
and Nature Center at Odiorne and seeing and touching the Crustaceans
and molusks in the big Saltwater Tank. We also got a real close up
view of a snail eating the algae off the aquarium glass. One of the
Centers Staff had a magnifying video camera connected to a monitor
and we could actually see the snail eating.

After the ride a stop at Lago's Lone Oaks Ice Cream replaced the
few calories we burn't off during the ride. Lago's is by far the
greatest Ice Cream on the Seacoast.

Hope we have as nice a day on the June 7th Ride as well as more
riders. The June 7th ride I gaurantee will be worth every pedal...

 Cheers!

June 7th is a Saturday and Saturday's are generally bad for me
as I have a parttime job. If you decide to cancel because of
rain though, I'd really love to go on the 8th.

The only bike I have access to is a mountain bike. Will that
be okay for a 30 mile trip? I haven't had much experience with
bikes since I was a kid.

    I, too, could make the 8th. I don't know how long a trip I
could do with Angeline on the back, but the descriptions so
    far are tantalizing....

Neil and I talked a bit about the planned ride. Shorter rides can be
easily accomodated. The important thing is to BE THERE! It's great!
I'm not particular about which day, 7th or 8th. For me, weather
dictates. I'm still in the wait and see stage. ;-)

63.158Either DayFOUNDR::SHEEHANMon May 19 1997 13:2820

I don't have a preference to which day so If
more can make it on Sunday the 8th then majority
 rules.

I'll keep you posted although I'd prefer if you
send me Email and tell me you want to go, which day
you'd prefer and if you'll be bringing you child.

This way I can easily create a list and send/post
the attendees prior to the ride.

 C-Ya!

Anyone want to hike Mt. Washington with me this Friday?

I've got the day off and am finding it hard to recruit anyone to come
hiking with me. I'm told that there is still skiing on the mountain
and that's scaring my friends off. I figure if I can make to the hut,
cross over to the other trail and head down I'd call it an
accomplishment (if there's too much snow to hit the summit).

Anyone have Friday off and is up to the challenge of making it up the
mountain in 2.5 hours? (max time). Send me mail!

That's pretty serious hiking! I've always wanted to do Mt. Washington
but the opportunity never came up. Looks like I missed another one.
;-) Some of the other "Presidentials" are more like stair stepping
exercises. What's your planned route like?

    Another time perhaps.

    hey Bill,

Welp, my planned route is make it as close to the top as possible
(weather permitting) and get back down. I'm hiking for exericse only
this time....no time to dilly dally or bird watch....chop! chop! :)

Anyone out there with a competitive streak in 'em? No?

    Hi,

I've hiked it twice, and would consider friday except I have to work,
and have plans directly after...otherwise maybe..

    I compete only when I know I'll win. ;-)

*After* you've made your Mt. Washington hike, I'll challenge you to a
run up and down Monadnock. ;-) Unfair you say? True, but it improves
    my chances of winning. ;-)

Seriously though, Friday's out for me. Wish I'd known...

It's been a few years since I "ran" up and down. I think it was on the
order of an hour plus. (a hour plus a couple?) ;-) No, probably not
more than 90 minutes round trip. Ok, so maybe that's not so fast.

    > ...don't lie! :)

    Moi! Hmmmph.

So, are you accepting the challenge? Since you're doing Mt. Washington
Friday, how about Saturday? I need to re-time myself.

    Bill :-)

I'm still wondering if lbassett is going to go hiking Mt.
Washington tomorrow even if alone?... Just friendly concern. I
don't know what the weather will be like up there tomorrow, but
GMA local should be pretty nice so hopefully it'll be nice up THE
    MOUNTAIN, too.

I've decided not to tackle Washington at this time since the reports
are saying that there is a ton of snow just past the tree line. I'm
not suicidal so I'll put this trek off for a few weeks. You'll be
    hearing from again though.......!

Re: Monadnock. 90 minutes roundtrip. Wow! You've got me beat! My PR
for getting to the top is 50 minutes. Do you still want to hang out
with me? I'm serious! Let me know today, because I'm not logging in
tomorrow (I'm not as geeky as you!)

That's a great time! As I recall, coming down only took about 30
minutes. So it looks like you'll lose me on the uphill and I'll fly
    downhill to catch up. ;-)

    > Let me know today, because I'm not logging in tomorrow (I'm not as

Ok, just for the record, lbassett and I went up Monadnock today.
Short story, I was left in the dust.

We went up White Dot just like the 300 or so people on the mountain at
the same time. Coming down, we ventured into newer territory. Smith
Summit Trail --> Fairy Spring Trail --> Thoreau Trail (which goes back
uphill!!) --> Lost Farm Trail. And the reason we went back uphill at
all costs was because lbassett didn't want to do either trail that had
"Cliff" in the name. Apparently done before and highly disliked. The
descent took about 2 1/2 hours.

My cardiovascular system gave out 20 minutes into White Dot. I
couldn't walk at double pace and trying to do so only killed me that
much sooner. From then on, I plodded, rested, plodded, etc. I was
about 15-20 minutes behind lbassett overall. Coming down, I retained a
bit of what little dignity was left.

Good workout. Lost 2-3 lbs. Gained it all back at dinner at the
    Border. ;-)

    Cheers,

63.177Seacoast Biking Trip Sun June 8th "see note 63.143"FOUNDR::SHEEHANMon Jun 02 1997 10:3350
 Hi folks,

If you are interested in attending this upcoming Seacoast Bike
ride be sure to E-Mail me letting me know so I can add you to
the distribution list and keep you updated on important info.

We will meet at my home at Hampton Beach and we'll ride
to Portsmouth along what could be considered the most Scenic
Drive in NH. Coastal Rt. 1 A. The trip is approx 30 miles round
trip but there are lots of stops along the way and it doesn't
seem that long. The road is well paved mostly flat and has a
generous bike lane most of the way. Mountain bikers will love
Odiorne's trails and riding on the packed beach sand.

Depending on the day and riders ablilities we may shorten the
trip to 15 or 20 miles and spend more time in and around in-town
Portsmouth. Or at least give riders an option to meet us at another
 place along the route.

 Some nice stops are....

 North Hampton State Beach
 Jenness Beach Rye
 Wallis Sands State Beach Rye
 Odiorne State Park Portsmouth
 Presscot Park Portsmouth
 Strawberry Banke Portsmouth.

If anyone you are interested please send mail to FOUNDR::SHEEHAN and
I'll send directions and keep you posted prior to the ride.
