At the risk of being a spoilsport...

I like music in all categories, and I dislike music in all
categories... There's almost no music that exists in
only one category; categories often get in the way of experiencing
really "*good*" music, in the same way that stereotypes get in
    the way of appreciating people.

In the words of Peter Schickele:
If it *sounds* good, it *is* good.

That being said, I really dig blues, choral music, almost all
"ethnic/world" music, the Dead (an excellent example of cross-genre).
I won't list the musics that I haven't yet learned to appreciate...

    	RE: .3

Ice-T says the same thing about categorization. He might be a
hardcore rapper, but he sounds quite intelligent.

    	RE: base note

I like almost everything, especially hard rock and metal. But I
do own at least a little of everything.

53.5Music is the only classificationTBC001::DROVERHEDGEHOGFri Mar 07 1997 10:5925
I would have to say I like most music. I would have to reply by the
most cds I have of a particular artist. The following is just a sample.
It isn't about music *types*. We as people need to categorize things.
    Label things.

BTW... speaking of Ice-T... I have the soundtrack to Tank Girl and I
love it. With the exception of Courtney Love Cobang... oops.. Cobain it
is generally a good cd and Ice-T has one of the better tunes: "Big Gun"

This is by no means a complete list, but here are some of the
performers for whom I have more than 1 cd...

    Elton John
    Neil Diamond
    Mettalica
    Madonna
    Andrew Lloyd Weber
    Manowar
    Guns n Roses
    Loreena Mckennitt
    Enya
John Mayall and the Blues Breakers
    Pearl Jam
    Nine Inch Nails
    etc etc etc
53.6Current top 10 :-)TBC001::DROVERHEDGEHOGFri Mar 07 1997 11:1024
However... why don't we as a better example type to pick our current 10
favorite songs? I say current because it changes often depending on
what is played and what we hear. For me, my roomate and I have quite a
few cds so we go off on tangents...

    Top 10.

    1. November Rain - Guns n Roses
    2. Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine
    3. Temple of Love - Sisters Of Mercy
    4. Heaven Sends You - The Mission
    5. Terrible Lie - Nine Inch Nails
    6. Closer - Nine Inch Nails
    7. The Witch - Cult
    8. Alive - Pearl Jam
    9. Estranged - GnR
    10.Surf's Up - Jim Steinman

Guess who's been spending more of his time at the harder dance bars :-)

Last while before that I was off on a Celtic Folk music tangent... go
    figure...

Speaking of Celtic folk music, check out an Irish band called
Horslips. They're fantastic. Their best album is "The Book of
Invasions", followed by "The Tain". Hard to find locally, so
you'd probably have to order it as an import.

The Corrs are quite good also ... 5-member group of brothers
and sisters. They only have one album out as of now.

53.8BUSY::SLABForget the doctor - get me a nurse!Fri Mar 07 1997 11:3110

Oh, and also speaking of Ice-T. If you like Ice-T, but rap isn't
really your thing, check out "Body Count" by his band Body Count.
That was the band that did the infamous "Cop Killer" that was ban-
ned from airplay and ultimately removed from subsequent re-releases
    	of the album.

Excellent album ... these guys rip. And "Cop Killer" isn't even
    	the best song on there.

53.9BUSY::SLABForget the doctor - get me a nurse!Fri Mar 07 1997 11:328

I couldn't even begin to draft a list of my 10 favorite songs. I
have way too much music, and it would take me a week to go through
it all and list 50 songs and then narrow that down to a mere 10.

And I don't really listen to the radio too often, so I don't hear
too much new music unless I happen to buy it for myself.

53.10Oh Yeah...TBC001::DROVERHEDGEHOGFri Mar 07 1997 11:4815
I have the album of the Corrs you are likely thinking of... does it
have that song "Forgiven not Forgotten" on it? And as for Body Count
(bc bc bc B C!) I have it and there is some great stuff on it "the
Winner Loses" was a good tune not to mention a few I really shouldn't
    post here....

I know what you mean about liking a lot of songs.. my top 10 just
happened to be the tunes stuck there recently... good stuff too!

Hrmm... hey.. what did you think of the cd "The Spaghetti Incident" by
GnR... they redid a lot of stuff and some of it was great...

It's good to find other music lovers out there!

I pretty much just like rock or blues. I like to hear some
good horns though, too. So once in a while I'll wind up
stopping the radio scan on some old, big band tune, or some
    Herb Albert.

    Within my collection,
    Aerosmith lots of Dire Straits
    Alan Parsons Moody Blues
    Eric Clapton Jeff Healy band
    Cream ELO
    Alice Cooper Guess Who
Eurythmics + Anne Lenox (solo) Tom Petty
    Cars Kansas
    Men at Work David Bowie
lots of Steely Dan Rolling Stones
    Led Zepplin Yes
    ZZ Top Dan Fogelberg
    Collective Soul Foreigner
    Live Joan Armatrading (sp?)
    Kate Bush Joe Cocker
Kenny Wayne Shephard lots of U2
    Jeff Beck Heart
    Green Day Joe Jackson
    Genesis Kinks
    Motels Pretenders
    Pink Floyd Beatles

Well, that's a pretty good sampling. I can't think of them all.

Oh! Let me not forget In-A-Gada-da-Vida! (Iron Butterfly)

    Kate Bush!!!!!

Did you hear her rendition of the Gershwin tune "The Man I Love"? If
you like horns and smooooooth music... it's to die for. It's on a cd
called "The Glory Of Gershwin" and is made up of many popular artists
singing some of ol George's cooler tunes...

Last CD listened to (this morning): Barenaked Ladies' "Gordon".

While I can't/won't listen to country music on radio, I do own quite a
bit of it. No immensely popular names though: Emmylou, The Mavericks,
Iris Dement, Roseanne Cash, that kind of thing.

So while I'm mostly a R&R fan, if it is "good", and I won't hear it
on the radio every five minutes (because that's what the radio is
    for), I'll buy it...

I like a lot of what I'm hearing on that "The River" station (92.5),
because they're quite varied in the musical styles they play (but
maybe still somewhat repetitious-- 'course I'm in the car a lot).

They write/play/sing all their stuff and are excellent.

I have not figured out why some 'light' rock stations don't include
more/any light CW like Colin Raye, Vince Gil, Mary Chappen Carpenter,
etc. For us romatics, so much of it fits and most don't sound country.

Yup, that's The Corrs album. Good stuff.

And the new Body Count album is due out this Tuesday. It was
supposed to be out months ago but for some reason was delayed.

I like most of "The Spaghetti Incident". Their cover of "Since
I Don't Have You" is great, I think, but others disagree. How-
ever, they'll have a hard time topping "Appetite for Destruction".

you are so right Joyce... she is an amazing (not to mention damn sexy!)
performer. Mind you... I had a *whole* new level of respect and
admiration for her when I saw the movie about her life...

Brings back an odd memory actually... I used to live with a girl named
Barbara some time back (she might be a bridesmaid this time - go figure)
and one morning I was terribly terribly hung over (I'd had 5 or 6
beers and a Ceasar the night before) and I'm sitting in bed cradling a
coffee and that song "We don't need another hero" comes on. When Tina
sings that line Barbie looks over and goes "Hey Jim.. she's singin to
    you..."

Hrm... I guess you just had ta be there...

Anyways.. back to the topic at hand - Tina Turner is pretty amazing.
